Laura Marling, Alas, I Cannot Swim

Reviewed by Andy Gill

Even by the advanced standards of precocity displayed by many of today's tyro performers, Laura Marling is an extraordinary young talent. Listening to the mature reflections and acute observations in these 13 songs, it's hard to accept that their author turned 18 this week, and is already getting her second wind, dismissing her earlier output as "shit pop" and "absolutely awful".

The change in her work apparently came through encountering Bonnie Prince Billy's haunting I See a Darkness, an aesthetic epiphany that forced her to think more deeply about what she was doing. The result is Alas, I Cannot Swim, on which her young voice reveals an old, old heart. It's most evident in songs like "Old Stone", in which a standing stone – "10,000 years and you're still on your own" – prompts reflections on the comforts of solitude and self-sufficiency, while rolling tom-toms swell and ebb against the drone of harmonium; and in "Cross Your Fingers", in which apprehension about the fragility of seemingly secure structures leads to contemplation of the broad flood-plain of old age leading to the estuary of death.

Elsewhere, one gets an impression of someone building their worldview as they grow, struggling to deal with new situations, and simultaneously drawn to both the outgoing urges of youth and more introspective moods. In "My Manic & I", she's caught up in a torrent of doubt which, one suspects, is self-directed: "I can't control you, I don't know you well, these are the reasons I think that you're ill"; while over the sombre acoustic guitar picking of "Shine", she warns a potential emotional intruder: "I need shine – stay away from my light." But there are shafts of light; in the opener, "Ghosts", a young man scarred by "a ghost that broke my heart before I met you" ultimately finds redemptive love with the singer. "It turned out I'd been following him, and he'd been following me," she explains.

Marling goes against the grain of most modern pop, eschewing mockney bitchiness, diva showboating, indie guilt and trite hip-hop attitudes in favour of a folksy simplicity relying on well-turned melodies and sensitive arrangements of guitar, piano and violin embellished by French horn, trumpet or accordion, and even a male voice choir. Producer Charlie Fink has created a warm, welcoming instrumental backdrop that frames Marling's voice perfectly, revealing (but not accentuating) the echoes of singers like Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShea and Jolie Holland. It all adds up to a hugely impressive debut from an outstanding talent.

Missy Higgins : The Sound of White

Missy Higgins was discovered in 2001, when the Melbourne high-school student's song "All for Believing" won an unsigned artist competition sponsored by Australian national radio station Triple J. The plaintive piano ballad was an instant hit, but Higgins took her time with the fame. She eventually signed with Australia's Eleven imprint, which issued a self-titled EP in November 2003. It contained both "Believing" and Higgins' second hit, "Greed for Your Love." The Scar EP appeared in August 2004 and set the scene for the full-length Sound of White, which dropped the following September. Higgins then toured Australia, released a live EP, and prepared for her American debut, which came in January 2005 with the domestic-only All for Believing EP. Released through Warner Bros., it included the title track and four other songs from the Sound of White LP (which was reissued in the U.S. shortly after). Two years later Higgins released her second full-length, On a Clear Night, which saw a U.S. release in early 2008.

Missy Higgins (born Melissa Morrison Higgins on August 19, 1983, in Melbourne) is one of Australia’s most popular female singer-songwriters. Missy (Melissa) was thrust into the limelight in her homeland when she won a demo competition conducted by the national alternative broadcaster, Triple J. Although she was still at high school, her song All For Believing quickly became one of the station’s most requested tracks of 2001. In 2005, Missy took out 5 major ARIA Awards: Album of the Year (for The Sound of White), Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release, Breakthrough Artist - Album (for The Sound of White) and Highest Selling Album.

by PeteRock

Coming straight outta SoCal is up-and-coming rapper K. Smith, and his debut single "Better Man". As if being the nephew of rap pioneer and Hollywood icon Will Smith wasn`t enough star power, K. scooped up Omarion for some additional assistance.

Better Man will definitely gain the attention of a young female audience, and once it gains momentum there, it just might make a charge for the Top 10 on most urban charts.

Coldplay : Violet Hill Music Video

Coldplay - Violet Hill - Le Clip! (New)
by wonderful-life1989

"Violet Hill" is a song by English rock band Coldplay from the band's fourth studio album "Viva la Vida" or "Death and All His Friends". The music video for the song was filmed in Sicily, Italy.

Martin described the song as having a "chalky, pastel feeling" which he said reminds him of his childhood. "Imagine a pseudo guitar-like circus music with a pinch of Chicago... It's something new from us and you will be impressed."

The new Coldplay single, and the first from forthcoming longplayer Viva la Vida and Death or All His Friends (details), isn’t as far a departure from the band’s trademark sound as the album’s title would have you believe. From the sounds of ‘Violet Hill’ this isn’t going to be the album where Coldplay look down from atop their piles of dough, go into a headspin and start rapping in non-sequiturs about the Congo or filling their bodies with silicone and junk. Brian Eno is here just in case, though, and the song drifts in on one of the trademark, Blade Runner drones colouring things like Ambient 1: Music for Airports, (think the start of ‘2/1’). Any fears that Coldplay have the balls to follow this path are waylaid when the plod happens and Chris Martin sleepwalks into a vocal that recalls Oasis track ‘Don’t Go Away’ as much as anything else. The song trots into life with five strikes of a crashing piano – as arch now as they were slowed down in Bowie’s ‘We Are the Dead’, which is strange given that Eno wasn’t around for that and most of ‘Violet Hill’ is as earnestly heroic as you’d expect from Coldplay, (“I wanna be a soldier who a captain on some sinking ship would stow far below/if you love me, won’t you let me know?”). The fact that it sounds heroic at all probably points to a return to Rush of Blood…-era musings, which somehow seemed darker-eyed and more manly than the frailties felt on last album X&Y. Taking that into account, along with the album’s art and title, it’s tempting to assume that Coldplay hear Viva la Vida… as a marker of resurgence – as a vengeful comeback of sorts. That’s all well and good, but to these ears ‘Violet Hill’ suffers just like the rest of Coldplay’s work – Martin’s desire to be a martyr is let down by the lack of a tangible cause and as such his band’s new single sounds too suffocated and self-absorbed.

One republic : Stop and Stare Music Video

Lyrics

This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us
It's time to make our move, I'm shakin off the rust
I've got my heart set on anywhere but here
I'm staring down myself, counting up the years
Steady hands, just take the wheel...
And every glance is killing me
Time to make one last appeal... for the life I lead

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're 'here' not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, can u see what I see

They're tryin to come back, all my senses push
Un-tie the weight bags, I never thought I could...
Steady feet, don't fail me now
Gonna run till you can't walk
But something pulls my focus out
And I'm standing down...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, you don't need

What u need, what u need...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be
Oh, do u see what I see...

Gary Jules : Falling Awake [Download]

He tells stories. The other thing is, he’s a captivating performer. He’s really serious about what he’s doing, he works really hard, and you throw that whole package together and you’ve got an artist who, in my opinion, could quite easily be selling out 2000 or 3000 seat venues.' Nic Harcourt, host, Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW, Los Angeles

Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets is Gary Jules’ second album. It gives space to Gary’s ghostly timbre, his delicate guitar playing and his vivid stories about HIS Los Angeles. Not the LA of Hollywood and shine and glitz and emptiness, but the downtown of Koreatown and the mausoleum-like Ambassador Hotel where Robert Kennedy was shot. 'A metropolitan city, more like New York than LA, where people are walking around, going about their business,' he says.

Mad World is a highlight, and the reason Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets is finally being released in the UK, but the album also contains plenty of poetic, captivating songs that recall Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens, country-influenced tunes (Patchwork G) and old European waltz/country ballads The Princess Of Hollywood Way and Barstool to the extremely pop sensible DTLA. It’s simple stuff, done elegantly and soulfully. It may have taken nearly two years for this album to make it to Europe, but no matter: these songs are in for the long-haul.

As well as appearing on Gary Jules’ second album, Mad World was originally on Donnie Darko - Music From The Original Motion Picture Score.

In December 1996, after paying his dues on the singer-songwriter scene, Gary was signed to A&M Records. He recorded his debut album, Greetings From The Side, in March 1997. After a year of waiting, at the record company’s behest, it was remixed. In August 1998 it was finally released. 'And two weeks later the record company disappeared,' he says with a dry laugh. A&M fell between the cracks of a corporate merger. 'There was nothing I could do. It disappeared so fast that I didn’t have copies of the album, so I couldn’t even go on road and sell it. And I was still signed so I couldn’t go and make a new record elsewhere. I was sold along with thousands of other people, and being near the bottom of the ladder it took a year to review my contract and for me to finally get dropped.' In the end Gary snagged 300 or 400 copies of Greetings From The Side and set about losing himself in whatever distractions came to hand - a very long weekend off the deep end. Then, weary from experience and in need of a new perspective, he went back to college and finished a degree in English literature.

In March 2001 Gary visited Michael Andrews in their hometown of San Diego. They did basic recordings of four of Gary’s new songs: Broke Window, DTLA, Pills and Patchwork G. Gary went back to LA, fired-up and back in the saddle. Over the course of the summer Gary and Michael worked on the record on and off, hammering out seven more songs that would make it on to Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets. Gary worked on two more tracks for the album - Lucky and Umbilical Town - on his own in Los Angeles while Michael was busy with his own music. Gary then took the tracks to his friend Zeke’s house in Los Angeles and mixed them on his home stereo.

Two years ago Gary released Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets himself. Donnie Darko and the response to Mad World gave his profile a shot in the arm. He is the originator of the music scene at the Hotel Café, a singer-songwriter cooperative/venue, which many consider to be the new beating heart of the Los Angeles artist community. From its humble beginnings, the Hotel has recently hosted the likes of Weezer, Ian Ball from Gomez, Damien Rice, Jewel, Lucinda, Jason Mraz, Pete Yorn, and many others. Gary has developed a strong following in various major US markets and has toured with Sheryl Crow, Todd Rundgren, Jack Johnson and Turin Breaks, managing to sell nearly 10,000 copies of Snakeoil in the U.S. - a remarkable figure for a self-released album with absolutely no advertising or marketing behind it. 'It started happening for me at the second attempt,' he says reflectively. 'Much more organically and dynamically. There was no established market for what I was doing then - David Gray hadn’t done White Ladder yet, and there was no Damien Rice model to plug me into - nobody knew how to sell a singer-songwriter in America. I figured it wasn't that big a mystery - write songs that mean something to you, sing them for whoever will listen, and hope that they mean something to them too.'

Sometimes I hear a song that seems so perfectly fitting for me in every way– in particular ways both permanent and transient– that I’m almost convinced that there is a divine spirit and it invoked the creation of something just for me. Gary Jules‘ “Falling Awake” is one of those songs (you can listen to the whole album at CD Baby). There are very clear echoes of Elliott Smith, particularly in this song. Jule’s vocal style also reminds me quite a bit of Peter Stuart…

Mixed by Bryan Cook. Other players: Michael Andrews: Bass, drums, backing vocals. Malcolm Cross: Drums, percussion, electric piano. Ben Peeler: Lapsteel guitar. Davey Chegwidden: Percussion.

[New Album] GREENDAY : Warning

The Introduction

It's April, it's Monday, college kids have a month or so of school left, and I'm back, yet again, with another edition of What The Hell Happened To!

I want to let you all know, before I start, that I will not be here next week, as a scheduling conflict will cause me to have literally no time to write the column. I will be back in two weeks though and will go straight through into the summer. I thought I could make it to 100 straight columns too. Oh well, 22 isn't too bad, now is it?

Last week, I dove into some depressing music, so this week, I'm going to lighten things up a bit…don't worry though, I'm not turning all happy and shit. I try to look at different genres of music in this column, as I feel that just sticking with metal and hard rock music will turn off other people who aren't into these genres.

That's not to say I'm going to review Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle or Flogging Molly's Swagger or any of those other stupid drunk Irish punk songs they do (I'm Irish, so I can say that). However, I do enjoy a vacation from the death metal growls and downtuned guitars every once in a while.

Green Day is a band that hardcore punk fans love to hate. I mean, they are the reason why bands such as Sum 41 and Blink 182 became way more popular than they deserved to be. That's not to say that Green Day doesn't have any talent. They do know how to write a catchy punk song. Hell, I myself crank up Dookie and Insomniac from time to time.

The band hit it huge with 1994's Dookie and would stay in the mainstream for years after that. Once the 21st century came around, the band tried to "mature" their sound, as many countless bands have tried to do. This time, though, it didn't work as well as Green Day could have hoped.

2000's Warning sold well, don't get me wrong (about 1 million copies in the US), but compared to their other albums, it was actually a sharp decline. The band would become a mainstream hit again with 2004's American Idiot, but for a while, Green Day was seen as a band that was fading out of the spotlight of the mainstream public.

This week, I'm going to take a closer look at Warning to see why the album doesn't get the praise that some believe it deserves.

The History

Green Day was formed in 1987, originally being called Sweet Children, and featuring Armstrong, Dirnt, and drummer John Kiffmeyer. Before the band released their first EP, 1,000 Hours, they officially changed their names to Green Day. The band was signed to Lookout! Records, where they released their first LP, 39/Smooth.

In late 1990, Kiffmeyer left the band to go to college. His temporary replacement was Tré Cool, drummer for punk band The Lookouts. When Kiffmeyer didn't look to be returning to the band, Cool was hired as the full time drummer for the band. This lineup is still together to this day, and their first recording was 1992's Kerplunk.

Kerplunk sold very well for a punk record on an independent record label (about 50,000 units) and got them national attention, helping to sign the band to major label Reprise Records. With producer Rob Cavallo (who would produce all the band's future albums, with the exception of, ironically, Warning), the band recorded Dookie,
which would become the band's most successful album to date, selling over 15 million copies worldwide, and getting mass exposure on MTV.

Their follow up, 1995's Insomniac, would be a critically and financial success, selling over 7 million copies worldwide. However, this would become a trend for the band, as each album would sell less and less until they got to American Idiot. Anyway, the band came back in 1997 with Nimrod, which had the band adding more musical elements into their music, including ska, surf rock, and hardcore. The band would tour for a few years and return into the studio to self-produce their next record, which would be the most experimental one to date for Green Day.

Review
Warning is a radically different Green Day album from any previous ones, or quite possibly, any future albums as well. First of all, the band decided to self-produce the album themselves and leaned their sound towards a more folk pop/punk hybrid that the band hadn't ever done before.

Maybe it was the record label, maybe it was their diminishing sales, maybe the band was realizing that they weren't 20 year olds anymore, or maybe they didn't give a shit anymore and wanted to do something different. Whatever the reason, Warning is the least popular album that the band has released on a mainstream label, based on album sales and critic reviews.

The biggest change to the band's sound comes mainly from one instrument: the acoustic guitar. Now, the band had used the acoustic guitar before, most famously in "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" from Nimrod, but the band employs the acoustic guitar in almost all of the songs, whether its driving the main melody or providing a brief calmness in a fast punk song. When the band is firing on all cylinders, utilizing both acoustic and electric instruments, Green Day sounds like they could get used to the more mature folky sound they let across.

A perfect example of this is the opening title track and the closing track. The title track is driven by acoustic guitars, but the electric guitars make their presence felt and turn the song into one of the catchiest songs on the album. "Macy's Day Parade," in my opinion, kicks the crap out of "Time of Your Life" and is the best ballad the band has ever written.

The first half of Warning, other than the title track, seems a bit lackluster, with Green Day sounding lifeless and drained at times. However, it is with "Misery" that the band gains a whole new life. "Misery", believe it or not, is one of my top five favorite Green Day songs of all time. Take the trademark Green Day sound, take it back to the 1940's, and give it to a local carnival, and "Misery" is the result. Accordion, mandolin, piano, farfisa, and horns are all used during its five minutes. The experimentation that the band does actually succeeds, considering who I am writing about.

The last four songs are the highlight of Warning. The big hit of the album was "Minority," which actually hit #1 on the US Modern Rock chart. The song is classic Green Day, with the "don't give a shit" attitude that the band became famous for in the mid 90's. "Waiting" is another personal favorite of mine, and I'm surprised it didn't become as big of a hit as "Minority."

I'm not going to say that Warning was a step in the right direction for the band. It would have been interesting to see what the band would have done if Warning was as successful as previous albums. I think having the band self-produce the album left for more creative freedom, where the band could experiment and try out new musical ideas. However, a producer can also tighten up the ideas and pick out flaws with any ideas. So maybe, a producer alongside the band is what is best for letting out the creative ideas or "juices" as some people call it. Warning is an underrated album in Green Day's extensive catalog and while some may call a "failed experiment," I call it a "intriguing risk."

Glaswegian indie rock foursome Frightened Rabbit has slowly revealed more and more of itself (in approximate proportion to the almost humorous multiplication of its membership) since unceremoniously shuffling into the consciousness of the American indiescenti in 2006. While the five-year-old bands principals remain cagey about using their last name (for the record: Hutchison, Hutchison, Kennedy a new third guitarist is named Andy Monaghan, according to Wikipedia), the gradual revelation is audibly manifested in the steady scrubbing away of noise and clamor of Frightened Rabbits recordings. This cleansing culminates with the release of the trios spectacular sophomore full-length, The Midnight Organ Fight. The set was recorded by Peter Katis (Interpol in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mobius Band), and, indeed, his production renders the tracks nearly crystalline.

[New Album] P.O.D. :When Angels And Serpents Dance

A few things have happened in the P.O.D. camp since the release of their last album, Testify. Frontman Sonny Sandoval lobbed off his signature dreads. Gasp! In all seriousness, the Cali band left longtime label Atlantic for the new confines of Columbia. And prodigal son, guitarist Marcos Curiel, who played with the band on multi-platinum super smashes The Fundamental Elements Of Southtown and Satellite before bailing, has returned to the fold. How do all these factors effect When Angels And Serpents Dance? Positively, I'm happy to report. P.O.D. have matured and progressed from their rap-rock-reggae hybrid, crafting smart songs with groove. When Angels And Serpents Dance is a well-manicured collection of radio-ready hard rock with balls. Sandoval still delivers his positive lyrics in a hip-hop cadence, and Curiel's riffs clamp down on the jugular on raucous rawkers like "Condescending" and "Addicted." The glorious "End Of The World," featuring a Gospel choir, is reminiscent of the band's huge Satellite hit, "Youth Of The Nation." But it's not a copy or repeat of past effort; this song is edgier, and at times, has a classic rock vibe pumping through its veins.

There's a spate of guest vocal appearances, ranging from Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir to the Marley Sisters to Helmet's Page Hamilton. All those guests make sense, since P.O.D. siphon from the punk rock, reggae, and metal tanks for influence. While rap–infused rock has fallen out of popular music's favor, P.O.D. manage to keep their formula fresh, thanks to their glass-half-full lyrical bend and infusion of reggae. When Angels And Serpents Dance is a healthy rebound for the Payable On Death.

[New Album]Switches:Lay Down The Law

You have to give the lads of Switches credit. From the very first track of their US debut full-length, “Lay Down The Law,” the band face the Queen references head on. “But it remains to be seen if you’ve got what it takes to be queen,” the band sings in a multipart harmony. Sure, they are referring to the song’s title, “Drama Queen,” but the energetic and catchy chorus poses an interesting question worth pondering.

Elsewhere on “Lay Down The Law,” Switches keep their dancing shoes on. The album’s title track is upbeat rock whose stamping rhythm spins like a top while “Stepkids In Love” pounds steadily, falsetto vocals careening behind the deep melody. The gentleness of “The Need To Be Needed” comes across as a slightly updated (and much less upbeat) version of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want” as “Killer Karma” sounds like a glossier version of Bowie.

Do Switches have what it takes to be Queen? No, of course they do not. But in their defense, while the sounds of Queen are notable in their music, there is far more to Switches than that. While “Lay Down The Law” offers a full introduction to the band, the album is, essentially, a few strong tracks that are surrounded with decent but not stellar filler. Switches go far enough with “Lay Down The Law” to grab the attention but that is where they abruptly stop.

British yobs wanna party like its 1975
In light of the mild-mannered Coldplay knockoffs of the last few years, its easy to forget that British rockers used to be cocky young things, happy to bang out shout-along choruses filled with drug references.Switches remember their debut LP sounds as if it were written with soccer stadiums in mind, complete with chirpy harmonies and hooks that broadcast singer Matt Bishops ELO fixation. But the quarter throws itself into these vintage gestures with so much verve and dumb-fun exuberance that the songs, even with their simplistic, catchphrase lyrics, are hard to resist. From the g lammy pop of Snakes & Ladders to the standout KIller Karma, they make the case
for old-fashioned, smartly-executed - and winning - bombast.

[Interview] The Veronicas :Twin sisters Twin Attach!

Just to clear things up, the Veronicas are twin sisters from Brisbane, Australia, and have nothing to do with Archie Comics' raven-haired rich-girl Veronica Lodge or teen TV sleuth Veronica Mars.

In fact, neither of them is even named Veronica, nor do they know anyone with the name, all of which kind of begs the question: Why go with "the Veronicas" anyway?

"The name is something we thought about for a long time, and we wanted it to be a girl's name, but we didn't want it to be 'the Jesses,' " guitarist Jess Origliasso laughed. "We were very conscious of not wanting to make it a twin thing, because we think that's really tacky."

"We didn't want it to be called 'the Lisas,' either," singer Lisa Origliasso added. "So one day we saw the movie 'Heathers,' and there's a line where one girl asks, 'Are you a Heather?' and Winona Ryder's character answers, 'No, I'm a Veronica,' and so we went with that, because she was this kind of cool, unique chick with an attitude."

And attitude is one thing the Veronicas have in spades. At the age of 5, the Origliasso sisters enrolled in an after-school musical theatre club, but after a few years of toiling away in low-budget revues of "Godspell" and "Hair," they ditched the club and decided to get serious. They took private voice lessons and for the next several years put in time playing gigs in Brisbane and around Australia's Gold Coast

"We were getting tired of just doing nothing, and we figured that there was no better way to get experience than getting out there in front of people when you're that young," Jess said. "We were just kind of thrust out there and forced to make it

By the time they were 14, the sisters were playing covers of Elvis and Roy Orbison tunes, and making an honest-to-goodness living on the Australian festival circuit. And when Jess got a guitar for her 18th birthday, the Veronicas began banging out original songs, brief three-chord blurts that eventually found their way into the right hands. By the time they were 19, the Origliasso sisters had signed Engine Room, the Australian production team responsible for making the Vines bright (yet fleeting) international stars.

"They take Australian talent overseas, develop it and try to get a major label to pick them up," Lisa explained. "So we were really lucky to sign with them. They sent us over the top."

Or, more precisely, they sent them all around the world, to work with pop maestros like Sweden's Max Martin (Britney Spears, 'NSYNC) and Germany's Toby Gad (Milli Vanilli, Enrique Iglesias). And, after a year on the road, the Veronicas returned home with more than 60 songs and a contract with Sire Records.

Now, having just turned 20, they're prepping their debut album, The Secret Life of ... the Veronicas, a slippery, shiny mix of angsty lyrics and guitar solos, and they've just been tapped by Calvin Klein to be the faces of the designer's fall fashion campaign. It's the beginning stages of a full-fledged rock-and-roll invasion, and it's a whole lot cooler than anything their friends back in Brisbane are currently up to.

"We used to be jealous of all our friends who were just taking it easy while we were rehearsing and stuff," Lisa said. "But now were playing gigs while they're working at Mackey's."

"They don't say 'Mackey's' over here," Jess pointed out.

"Oh, right. Sorry. 'Mackey's' is Micky D's, McDonald's," Lisa laughed. "Sorry about that. That was my Australianess coming out."

[New Album Review] Hook Me Up

There is an old cliché phrase I was once taught that said: “If you go into something thinking it’s going to be bad, then it’s going to be bad. However, if you go into something with a positive attitude, then it will turn out well”. I would now like to condemn whoever it was that taught me this. On the back of the highly infectious title track/lead single, I was genuinely excited for the new album from former tween sensations The Veronicas, Hook Me Up. With any luck it wouldn’t be like their previous effort, The Secret Life Of…, which became incredibly lacklustre after the first four tracks (all of which, must be pointed out, were commercially released singles).

So, upon listening to the album, the questions have to be put. Is the album better than its predecessor? The answer is yes. Does it feature a new sound and direction for the Orglissano twins? Yes again. But have the Veronicas made a great album because of this? Sadly, no. Far from it. Hook Me Up is a disappointing album, filled with half-baked ideas and ignoring its potential to be a great pop album- or, even, a great dance album.

“Untouched” is an admittedly great opening track, featuring everything that is good about this album. A bizarre alt-pop wave of synths, string section sampling and dissonant guitar, with motor-mouth vocals in the verse, leading up to a great hook in the chorus. This fades out and right into “Hook Me Up”, the lead single and easily the best song on the album. At first, chances are you may not like it (I know that when I first heard it, I hated it). But the best thing about this song is how damn infectious it is, thus making it an excellent pop song with top harmonies and a synth hook Hellogoodbye would be envious of. The one-two punch of this song and the title track prove how good this album could have been. Unfortunately, it’s mostly downhill from here.

The next two tracks either suffer from trying to be too much at once (“This Is How It Feels”), and generally not going anywhere (“This Love”). It’s certainly a departure from the guitar pop-rock of their previous album, but it appears not all change is good in this case. As the album progresses from here, you can’t help but get the feeling that the band really need to pull a rabbit out of their hat. And while they certainly come close to it- “I Can’t Stay Away” features some lively beats, and “All I Have” features come catchy moments, live drums (exactly what this album needed more of), and some very cool use of a vocoder- but there is just too much filler and lazy song writing. Songs like “I Don’t Wanna Wait” and “In Another Life” both have great potential, but the best parts of the song aren’t furthered to make for a better overall.

And then there’s “Popular”- what can be said about this one? Basically, if Peaches went out and got completely hammered with Princess Superstar and they managed to have some kind of inbred lovechild with “Best Damn Thing”-era Avril Lavigne as the midwife, it would probably come out sounding something like this. And believe me, this is definitely not a compliment. Talking about the song, the girls say that the song is “taking the piss out of famous people”. However, in a similar vein to Good Charlotte atrocity “I Just Wanna Live”, you simply cannot tell and it comes off as vain and cheap.

It’s good that, at the very least, the Veronicas have gone for something different from the pop market at the moment. But it’s a bitter letdown that, even after all this change, most of the songs just aren’t very good. Not even the fantastic single can save this one. A pity, really, given how good this album could have been.

For fans only- though chances are you may not be much of a fan after this record, even if you were before.

[Interview] Counting Crows talk to latest album & DOWNLOADS

Fourteen years ago this month, Counting Crows burst onto the music scene with the hook-laden single Mr Jones and the multi-platinum album, August And Everything After.

Their latest CD is split into two distinct parts - the angry, rock of Saturday Nights and the laid-back folk vibes of Sunday Mornings.

Lead singer Adam Duritz talks about his fight to get the record released, insomnia, and getting angry with fans.

The album was originally supposed to come out last November - did you have trouble finishing it?

Not at all. It's been done since last June. We pulled the record ourselves because the label didn't have any idea of how to put it out.

What happened?

There's this massive invention that allows everyone to reach everyone else in the entire world for free. It's called the internet and I was trying to explain that to the record label.

I wanted to put out a free "digital 45" - one song from each side of the record - to get the idea of the album's two different themes out there.

So the label didn't like the idea?

Well, they said no. So we pulled the record - and believe me they weren't happy with losing a Christmas release.

You eventually got your way. Do you think the tactic worked?

Put it this way - I got an email from a guy I know at Apple a month before the album was available, and the pre-sale version was at number eight on iTunes.

There was no single, we hadn't done any press at that point, there was no reason for us to be that high on the charts - except we did all this online stuff.

I don't know about the record business, but the music industry is not dead. It's a great time to be in a band because there's a tool that allows you to reach everyone for free.

You adopted the internet very early on [Duritz has kept an online diary for years]. Are you ever overwhelmed by the number of fans? Presumably some of them are a bit obsessive.

We have big arguments! You know, I promised them at the very beginning that I would be honest about everything and that meant that when I got angry with them, I would write angry stuff and we would have huge fights!

Has there ever been a point when you've thought: "I can't take this anymore" and decided to stop writing to people on the website?"

No, but there was about a year when I either began or ended every diary entry with "some of you are very unpleasant people!"

It began because I've been a good friend of the actress Mary Louise-Parker [Weeds, The West Wing] since we were kids. Someone from her fan club wrote to our site asking if anyone would like to raise money to buy a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for her, and she just got savaged by our fans.

They laid into this poor girl who was, you know, just like them. She was somebody's fan. So I just ranted at them on every post - even the nice ones.

I'd write something beautiful like: "Everything is possible and your dreams can come true. By the way, some of you are very unpleasant people, love Adam."

Do you still suffer from insomnia?

I've always had problems - I have a dissociative disorder, which makes the world seem like it's not real. And when the world doesn't seem real, it can be really scary to let go and give up even more of it. So sleep has always been something of a problem.

It's particularly hard for me because of the gigs. A gig is like doing a workout that ends at 11:30. I don't get home 'til after one and I'm wired. So touring really adds to my insomnia.

Does it affect your writing?

A lot of my songs are about isolation and certainly that sensation is never quite as strong as it is in the middle of the night. But I've written a lot of songs in the daylight, too.

You're coming over to headline the Wireless Festival in UK this year - are you excited?

Oh yeah, that's cool. Headlining in Hyde Park? That's pretty cool.

We made our career in Europe by playing festivals, so I have a lot of love and reverence for those shows.

What's your favourite festival memory?

In the 1990s, we spent a whole summer where our end of the day ritual was to meet the guys from Gomez at the side of the stage and smoke cigarettes and drink cans of beer and watch Oasis.

Noel Gallagher is a genius. Those songs are great, and they're loud and they're fun. That's a really good way to spend the end of the day.

If there’s lessons to be learned, I’d rather get my jamming words in first so, when your playing with desire, don’t come running to my place when it burns like fire boy.

Chorus:
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh

Blue, blue, blue, waves they crash as time goes by, so hard to catch.

[Review] RICK ROSS BOSS Ft. T-PAIN : TRILLA Att.MV & DOWNLOADS

Rick Ross - Trilla
Album Review by: John Burnett

I've come to a disheartening and perplexing conclusion. I—like many rap heads—am addicted to crack rap. After mad years of hearing the same embellished Tony Montana motifs play out over different beats I still enjoy hearing properly executed rhymes about the wanton exploits of your respective neighborhood medicine man. And judging from the sales that are attached to some of these coke-laden rap discs, so do you. The narrator on this occasion happens to be Rick Ross and the cinematic experience is Trilla.

Based off of Port of Miami, I predicted two things for what I’d hear on Trilla. There was going to be some dope beats and probably a few (much sarcasm intended) references to coke. I was right about both but there was also an added bonus. Coming out on the back end, I’ve come to the realization either Rick Ross acquired an ill ghostwriter or dude’s flow has vastly improved. On the Bink! produced (and eerily Roc-A-Fella nostalgia inducing) “We Shinin’” I caught a surprise blow to the chin by the quote “am I a target for police because I puff E/not an artist I’m regarded as a Puffy/like a pimp I’mma skip past a Kim Porter/like a pimp order, pimp, I import her.” I mean this is Rick Ross right? The flow doesn’t fall off either with Ross tucked neatly between the church-like organs and wailing sample. Then there’s the literal gangster role call provided on the “Trilla Intro” where Ross oddly proclaims he’s rhyming with kush and lean on his breath. In the most sinister way possible Ross gruffly barks “I don’t give a fuck about death/cause death don’t give a fuck about flesh/cause flesh don’t give a fuck about mine/and never gave fuck about mine.”
