[Artist] Gossip

Gossip is a band consisting of: Beth Ditto (vocals), Brace Paine (guitar, bass, sp-555) and Hannah Blilie (drums).

platter--simply titled "The Gossip"--with prominent Olympia producer/In 1999, after living a life feeling like lonely coyotes and huggy bears in Searcy, Arkansas, the radical feminism-infused punk unit Gossip relocated to Olympia, Washington where the trio recorded its first trash-ed out soul 7"indie music titan Calvin Johnson for his influential K Records label.

In a celebrity-obsessed age of product placement and plastic pop stars, Gossip are arguably the realest band in rock ‘n roll. Led by the Arkansas-born Beth Ditto, an often naked, unapologetically overweight outspoken feminist named NME’s coolest person in rock, Gossip have been breaking boundaries with their fiery soul-punk since 1999. Not because they’re bleeding heart activists (although they do wear their politics on their sleeves) or out to shock people, but because they just are who they are — not out to please anybody or make a million fans — totally real. As guitarist Brace Paine, original drummer Kathy Mendonca (now replaced by Hannah Blilie) and Beth put it, way back in the beginning, “We started a band ’cause we were bored. Our mission is to make you dance, and if you’re not gonna dance, just stay at home and listen to the oldies station.”

Although obviously not your average spotlight stealers, Gossip have more than earned their infamy. Formed in Arkansas back in ‘99, they relocated to Olympia, Washington where they signed with Calvin Johnson’s legendary indie label, K Records. Their big break came six years later by way of third full-length, Standing In The Way Of Control. The title track, an all-out anthem, quickly hit #1 on the UK charts and became the unofficial theme song of British teen melodrama, Skins. This was a particularly major breakthrough because the song was written as an angry response to the US government’s refusal to allow gays the right to marry. Again, not your average spotlight stealers.

Let’s get back to Beth a minute because she deserves way more than one run-on sentence. One of the music world’s fiercest individuals, the powerhouse has appeared nude on several magazine covers under unflaggingly punk circumstances. In interviews she has admitted everything from a distaste for deodorant to having eaten squirrels (although she later claimed it was her cousin who ate the critters). But she’s not all outrage all the time. What her philosophy really comes down to may have been revealed in her regular Guardian column, “What Would Beth Ditto Do,” where she said, “Women aren’t cats, we aren’t pets, we are just people trying to cross the freaking street to get an ice-cream.”

Fronted by the brash and unapologetic Beth Ditto, Gossip is simultaneously iconic and iconoclastic, a musical and aesthetic equation of sensibilities drawn from Yoko Ono + Kim Gordon + Tobi Vail + Roseanne Barr. Forged from new visual and musical templates, Gossip is one of pop music's most uncompromised bands since the Shaggs. The members of Gossip have come to accept the fact that they can never be Grace Jones. "We can only close our eyes and stand on stage," they exclaim, "and pretend to be Grace Jones!"

Gossip released its first full-length collection of never would-be hits, "That's Not What I Heard," in January 2001 and its successor, the feedback layered salute to The Stooges "L.a. Blues" EP "Arkansas Heat," in 2002 after touring with the White Stripes, The Kills, Chromatics, Les Georges Leningrad and Sleater-Kinney. The group's second full-length collection, "Movement," was released in May 2003.

Gossip achieved a threshold of slashdance with its last studio LP/CD, 2006's "Standing In The Way Of Control," which crawled up the UK album chart (eventually peaking at 22) while the album's title track became a UK chart slayer in its own right. After becoming the unofficial theme music for the popular British television teen drama, "Skins," the track danced over to the UK indie chart, heating up Billboard's European Top 100 Albums and the European Hot 100 Singles charts while selling copies in the UK. Gossip turned in a fractured rendition of "Standing In The Way Of Control" during the group's national television debut on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" in April 2008. Paul Schaffer was staring their eyes the whole time making them wholly uncomfortable. Following the performance, Letterman told the group how much it made him want to climb into the back of a van with Gossip and head out on tour, going so far as to offer to pick up the tab. The band have plans to call him every single about this alleged offer until he accepts or files a restraining order against the band.

Gossip appeared on the cover of the UK's prestigious music bible NME no less than three times in 2007, with the June 2nd issue notoriously featuring Beth Ditto dressed proudly in her "birthday suit." The NME pronounced Beth its 1 choice for "Coolest Of 2007" while, back in the States, Spin featured Beth in a six-page spread.

Now living down in Portland, Oregon, Gossip has opened for and toured with: Le Tigre, Chromatics, Tracy and The Plastics, Sonic Youth, Pre, YYY, Sleetmute Nightmute, Glass Candy, the White Stripes, CSS, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Erase Errata, Stereo Total, and The Kills among others.

During the summer of 2007, Gossip was a part of the True Colors Tour 2007, which traveled through 15 cities in the United States and Canada. Gossip members generally loved the cafeteria food served backstage and found great friends in some of the cafeteria workers while vowing to stay away from the gambling machines at the casinos. Headlined by Cyndi Lauper, the True Colors Tour also featured Debbie Harry, Erasure, Rufus Wainwright, The Dresden Dolls, The Misshapes, The Cliks and other special guests. Profits from the tour went to benefit the Human Rights Campaign. The Gossip kept proclaiming during the tour, "Why aren't Yaz and a Klaus Nomi tribute playing this damn festival".

On June 24, 2007, Gossip closed the Glastonbury Festival, with Beth Ditto paying tribute to legendary DJ John Peel during the group's set exclaiming "JOHN PEEL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNDERGROUND!!!"

April 15, 2008 saw the release of "Gossip - Live In Liverpool," a deluxe Live CD/DVD combination package from Portland's premier soul/experimental unit. Captured live at a real concert on July 9, 2007, "Gossip - Live In Liverpool" focused on the deep raw power, energy and intensity in the heat of Gossip's chains + eyeliner meld of noise + politics + rhythm. This incendiary show broke out killer performances of Gossip soul/rippers including the band's chart-slaying "Standing In The Way Of Control"; the UK Top 40 hit "Listen Up"; and the 3 UK Indie track, "Jealous Girls," as well as minimalist renditions of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" and Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?"

"Gossip - Live In Liverpool" included a DVD of the concert, lensed by documentary filmmaker and music video director Lance Bangs (Sonic Youth, Green Day, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, Kanye West, Pavement, Mike Watt and more).

In April 2008, Gossip put all of their personal relationships and other commitments on hold to jump on a plane, land, bundle up in a van and then drive to a city near you in celebration of "Gossip - Live In Liverpool." Gossip's mini-tour of select US cities included gigs in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in addition to the group's watershed performance on Letterman.

[Rewind] Alison Krauss:Baby, now that I've found you

Did we remember!
The song that we were young man.The sound of violin ,folk guitar and sweet vocal.

Alison Krauss has been getting a workout of late. That's her singing ethereal duets with Alan Jackson and Shenandoah, supplying background vocals for Vince Gill and on Dolly Parton's Heartsongs, and opening shows for Garth Brooks. In fact, country music fans have heard so much from Krauss, they might not realize that this newly inducted member of the Grand Ole Opry is a bona fide , bluegrass star with two Grammys and three new nominations to her credit. As if to remind people of her ''other'' career, here comes Now That I've Found You: A Collection (Rounder). This set of nine songs culled from a five- album catalog recorded from 1987 to 1994 would be nothing more than a crash course in Alison Krauss if it didn't also contain three new, unreleased songs and a bonus track, the Grammy-nominated ''When You Say Nothing at All,'' from Keith Whitley: A Tribute Album. The reprised material is often thrilling-a traditional bluegrass-gospel cut with the Cox Family (1993's ''When God Dips His Pen of Love in My Heart'') features Krauss and Suzanne Cox harmonizing like long-lost siblings. The new songs are also interesting, but more for the unsettling things they say about where Krauss is headed musically. As a bluegrass artist, Krauss has always stood apart. For one thing, she's young (23) and female in a field traditionally dominated by older men. For another, her high, feathery soprano, innocent as an angel's and just as pure, sounds like that of no other established star, except perhaps early Dolly Parton. Finally, with total record sales hovering over the 500,000 mark (most bluegrass albums sell around 20,000), she's a genuine commercial success. Predictably, major labels have tried to woo her with all manner of candy, flowers, and mainstream success. But Krauss, who looks like Linda Ronstadt with hair by Botticelli, has steadfastly refused to leave her Cambridge, Mass.-based independent, Rounder Records, suggesting a desire to play bluegrass and gospel, not contemporary country, and to pursue music instead of fame. So add integrity to the above list. Yet while Krauss and her crack band, Union Station, have always balanced traditional bluegrass and newgrass tunes by the likes of Ralph Stanley and John Pennell with pop songs by Shawn Colvin, Karla Bonoff, and the Beatles, her music increasingly resembles that of the post-bluegrass Ricky Skaggs. Much of it isn't really bluegrass anymore, but acoustic country-folk performed with the former genre's feeling and instrumentation. The fireworks of her early fiddle-contest days are pared down to lyrical obbligatos to complement the songs, and there's more piano than banjo, or at least an equal amount. Two of the new tracks on this album take Krauss even further off her former path, mostly through her treatment of improbable material, like Bad Company's ''Oh, Atlanta,'' a song whose blues format she never pushes far enough. And on ''Baby, Now That I've Found You,'' a slowed reworking of the Foundations' 1967 hit, there's a conga drum, but no banjo, an understated mandolin, and only one true solo-from Krauss' soulful fiddle. It's as pretty as a muted Kodachrome, but so tastefully restrained that it might as well be a religious hymn. Likewise, the production has the ambiance of a contemporary Christian record. It's only on the third new cut that you hear Krauss at her rootsiest and finest: In singing the Cox Family's ''Broadway,'' she injects a true homesickness in her high lonesome vocal. Coming from the bluegrass genre, where fire in the belly is a foregone conclusion, Krauss ought to know that to douse the fire in pop is to cut out its very heart. Refinement has its virtues but only to a point. Perhaps it's time for Krauss to rethink her strategy for avoiding mainstream success.

Lyrics
Baby,
now that I've found you
I won't let you go
I built my world around you
I need you so,
baby even though
You don't need me
now

Baby,
now that I've found you
I won't let you go
I built my world around you
I need you so
Baby even though
You don't need me,
You don't need me oh, no

Baby, baby,
when first we met
I knew in this heart of mine

That you were someone I couldn't forget.
I said right,
and abide my time

Spent my life looking
for that somebody
to make me feel like new
Now you tell me that you want to leave me
But darling, I just can't let you

[guitar & fiddle solo]

Baby, baby,
when first we met
I knew in this heart of mine
That you were someone I couldn't forget.
I said right,
and abide my time

Spent my life looking
for that somebody
to make me feel like new
Now you tell me that you want to leave me
But darling, I just can't let you

Now that I found you
I built my world around you

I need you so, baby even though
You don't need me now

Baby, now that I've found you
I won't let you go
I built my world around you
I need you so
Baby even though
You don't need me
You don't need me no, no

[Concert] NOLA Jazz Festival '08

Man, we've gotten buried with a such a barrage of non-stop festival announcements that we've neglected some our favorite festival mainstays. Case in point, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

This festival -- which has pretty much set the standard for city-oriented festivals in the U.S. -- is set to take place April 25-27 and May 1-4. Here are a few of the bigger names making appearances this year:

The Neville Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw, Santana,Maze feat. Frankie Beverly, Sheryl Crow, Widespread Panic, Dr. John, Al Green, Diana Krall,Keyshia Cole, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, The Raconteurs, Irma ThomasSteel Pulse, John Prine, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint, Randy Newman, Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea, O.A.R., Galactic, The Roots, Dianne Reeves, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Burning Spear, Ozomatli with Chali 2na, Rebirth Brass Band, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tower of Power, Delbert McClinton, John Hammond, Cassandra Wilson, Keb’ Mo’, The Count Basie Orchestra feat. Patti Austin, Pete Fountain, The Derek Trucks Band, Richard Thompson, Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, The Radiators, James Cotton, Cupid, The John Butler Trio, Del McCoury, Vernel Bagneris: Jelly Roll & Me, Terence Blanchard with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Buckwheat Zydeco, John P. Kee & the New Life Community Choir, Cowboy Mouth, Byron Cage with Kim Burrell, Bishop Paul S. They've now released the set times for all seven days of the festival, hooking us up with their scheduling "Cubes" to help us wade through the enormous mess of artists and bands:

April
Friday 4/25
May
Like other massive music festivals, this can be a bit overwhelming to schedule properly. Try as you might, you probably just can't check out every band your little heart desires. Of course, Jazz Fest is great in the sense that even when you get off track, you're bound to wander into some bar or by a random street corner and catch a great show by musicians you may have never even heard.
Anybody going this year?

By Julian Ryall

TOKYO (Hollywood Reporter) - A ballad from Madonna's upcoming album will provide the theme music for a new Japanese television show, the first time the pop diva has licensed a tune for a TV drama here.

The song, "Miles Away," will be used for the show "Change," which is scheduled to begin airing in April. It is taken from Madonna's "Hard Candy" album, which is set for release here April 30.

The show stars local heartthrob Takuya Kimura in the tale of a small-town elementary school teacher who is suddenly -- if improbably -- propelled into the position of prime minister of Japan. Madonna met Kimura when she appeared as a guest on the his "SMAPxSMAP" variety show in 2005.

Pearl Jam Do the East Coast | 2008 Summer Tour Dates

Photo courtesy of The Sky I Scrape

When a band announces a headlining slot at a major summer festival, a full tour is usually in the works. That's now officially the case with Bonnaroo headliner Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder and co. will embark on an East Coast tour sandwiching their stay in Manchester, TN with dates from Florida to Massachusetts. The 10-date tour will include a two-night stay at Madison Square Garden. It will be their first time playing the Garden in five years.

A Pearl Jam tour should be a welcome addition to the summer schedule of any serious concert goer; I know it is for me. For my money, their live show is worth every penny and is on-par with the best in the business. Plus, they're continuing their strong taste in opening acts (recent openers include My Morning Jacket and Sleater-Kinney). This June they'll be bringing Kings of Leon and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists along for the ride.

Live: Matchbox Twenty with Alanis Morissette and Mute Math

ROB THOMAS: The Matchbox Twenty frontman found solo success, but new sessions rekindled the band’s fire.

The band celebrates its past and future, receiving strong support from its guests.
By Sarah Tomlinson, Special to The Times March 18, 2008
It's good to be Matchbox Twenty. The band feted this fact with a triumphant two-hour set Sunday night at the Staples Center. Supporting its 2007 greatest hits album, "Exile on Mainstream," with the band's first national tour in more than four years, the quintet tapped unlikely but compelling openers Alanis Morissette and up-and-coming alt rock group Mute Math for an eclectic, heartfelt show
After more than 10 years together and 28 million albums sold worldwide, Matchbox Twenty approached its latest release as its swan song but instead discovered a new sense of unity in the studio. Rather than simply serving as a vehicle for material by frontman Rob Thomas, whose 2005 solo album " . . . Something to Be" also achieved multi-platinum success, the band collaborated fully for the first time on six new songs. This newfound solidarity came through during the band's tight, congenial performance.
Promising an adoring audience the chance to forget the world's horrific happenings, Thomas drew fans into the bubble of the band's likable, if at times overly safe, reality. Other than the new single "How Far We've Come," a spry pop-rock anthem about the end of the world, the band stuck close to the personal all night. Thomas emoted his way through new songs, including hooky, piano-laced "If I Fall," and humorous ode to married life "I'll Believe You When," as well as abundant hits, such as moody ballad "Back 2 Good" and acoustic guitar-laced "3 AM."
The band has said the title of its latest is both a play on the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street" and an affable dig at their own success. Perhaps such humor signals a desire to start digging deeper.
The moments when they strayed from their formula were the most winning. "The Difference" achieved melancholy grace with a country twang, and "So Sad So Lonely" exuded cheeky exuberance. A ferocious cover of the Beatles' "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" and an ardent take on Cracker's alt-rock classic "Low" revealed the power this band could achieve with riskier, more ambitious material.
Seven-time Grammy-winner Morissette made her career putting it all on the line with her raw, feminist anthems and unapologetically quirky personality. Her fierce hourlong set highlighted her immense vocal range and knack for radio rock anthems with substance. Backed by a five-piece band and looking like a rock star in black vinyl pants, Morissette delivered a kinetic performance, pacing the stage and whipping her hair during the theatrical opener "Uninvited" and fierce rocker "Eight Easy Steps."
Giving a sneak peak of her upcoming album, "Flavors of Entanglement," due later this year, she played pretty rocker "Underneath" and the throbbing, almost medieval-sounding "Moratorium." The playful mood culminated in her vampy cover of the Black-Eyed Peas' "My Humps," delivered in a pink boa.
New Orleans-based alt rock quartet Mute Math made the most of its opening slot. A fiery set of taut, textured songs from the group's 2007 major-label debut showed off a knack for neatly blending rock ferocity, proggy experimentalism and a reggae style reminiscent of the Police. The memorable finale found singer-keyboardist Paul Meany doing handstands on his keyboard as the band went wild.

Langerado 2008 | Day II Photo Round-up

from:http://www.livemusicblog.com/festivals/08/03/17/langerado-2008-day-ii-photos-review.php#more

Although he was unfortunately unable to stay for the entirety of the Langerado festival, our man Drew Gerlach gave us a nice rundown of the first night's festivities. He also caught some solid sets during his second night of Langerado, and sent us a bunch more photos. Check it out.

Day Two of Langerado unfortunately started off a little bit later than I had originally planned. But after spending close to three hours in traffic, I finally made it into the show just as Thievery Corporation took the stage. Unlike the previous day's heat wave, a front pushed through in the middle of the night (with tornado warnings and massive thunderstorms). This caused perfect festival temperatures during the day hovering around 70 degrees. But once that sunset, the wind kicked up and the temp dropped faster than one of Mix Master Mike’s beats. With wind gusts between 10 and 20 mph, it felt like it was close to 45 degrees. When you can see your breath and your wearing shorts (as I was) you knew you were in trouble.
But with some luck I lasted late into the night. Here are my highlights from the night.
Biggest Surprise: REM busting out eight songs from their new album Accelerate. Simply put, fricking brilliant. This is one of their best albums since Automatic For The People, but has an edgier, quicker pace. Most songs topped out a little under three minutes. I preordered their album as soon as I woke up on Sunday morning. Do the same, I promise you won’t regret it.
Biggest Disappointment: Tie between traffic and time slot for Thievery Corporation. After two straight days of two-hour delays, you think by the third day it could have been solved. The funny thing was that it seemed like attendance was down from Friday. Also, whose bright idea was it to put an amazing techno and house group on the stage at 6pm? Thievery could have put on a killer late night set. What happened here?

Headliner: REM kicked the crap out of the Everglades and took names. I haven’t seen REM since ’95 on their Monster Tour, and boy did I miss them. Between Stipe’s playful banter with the crowd, hearing great new songs, and hitting solid classics, this turned out to be the highlight of the evening. Whether he was asking the crowd if they were cold, suggesting we populate the Everglades, or recommending we cuddle up to one or two or three people, I haven’t seen a more amicable front-man since Chris Martin’s self-deprecating and charming self. Even though they cut off their set at around 11:05, 25 minutes prior to their scheduled finish, as you can tell by the setlist below, they played a strong lineup mixing classics with new. Anyone sleeping in their tents prepping for late nights missed out on the best set of the evening hands down. I will leave you with the words Stipe left the crowd, “We are REM, and this is what we do”.

1) What's the Frequency, Kenneth?

2) A new song from the album Accelerate. I have a feeling this will be their 2nd single.

3) Bad Day

4) Drive

5) Fall on Me

6) Hollow Man (off the new album Accelerate)

7) Southern Central Rain

8) Orange Crush

9) Accelerate (off the new album Accelerate)

10) Imitation of Life

11) Man-Sized Wreath (off the new album Accelerate)

12) Begin the Begin

13) Electrolite

14) Houston (off the new album Accelerate)

15) Losing My Religion

16) Horse to Water (off the new album Accelerate)

17) Walk Unafraid

18) The One I Love

ENCORE

19) Supernatural Superserious (off the new album Accelerate)

20) Auctioneer

21) I'm Gonna DJ (off the new album Accelerate)

22) Man on the Moon

Set list put together from my memory and REM and Langerado discussion boards.

Final thoughts for the evening: I caught the first 45 minutes of Matisyahu, and came away mildly impressed. He put on a solid show and kept the crowd dancing on this cold night. Late night performances were rearranged because of REM leaving early. I caught part of Pelican and Dan Deacon’s show. Pelican, an instrumental band that reminded me of Metallica without James Hetfield. Not really my cup of tea. Also, Dan Deacon was flat-out weird. You could easily tell who was sober at this show because they were the ones looking around at the audience asking themselves, “Are you really enjoying this crap?”

Here are a few more photos from the evening's festivities:

Sheryl Crow's "DETOURS" Available NOW!

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans," John Lennon sang, and that lyric could stand as the theme of Detours, the powerful new Sheryl Crow album. What happened in Crow's case — the collapse of her engagement to Lance Armstrong ("Diamond Ring"), a bout with breast cancer ("Make It Go Away") and a world in meltdown ("Shine Over Babylon") — is intense but far from a laugh riot. "Now That You're Gone" and "Love Is All There Is" are the sort of big pop singles Crow is known for. For the most part, though, Detours is a relatively stripped-down affair.
The album was produced by Bill Bottrell, who also oversaw Crow's multiplatinum 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club. Each track assumes its own sonic identity. "Peace Be Upon Us" mingles lush Arabic elements and psychedelic effects; "God Bless This Mess" features Crow accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and sounds as raw as a demo. The easy swing of "Love Is Free" balances the jittery rhythms and schoolyard chants of "Out of Our Heads." What holds these fourteen songs together is Crow's unwavering emotional commitment. She confronts both personal and political terrors, and emerges hopeful — getting where she needs to go, despite the detours.
