Bun B : “II Trill”

Ever since UGK released “Underground Kingz”, I’ve been obsessed with them. I bought every one of their albums, and also Bun B’s first cd, “Trill”. Every release has been amazing, aside from “Dirty Money”, which is OK, but not great. “II Trill” deserves a place right above “Trill” as another solid release.

Bun B steps up his game, and creates a truly memorable album that is severly needed in today’s Hip Hop world. Every song on this album is good, and a handful of them are great. Songs like “Swang On Em” ft. Lupe Fiasco, “You’re Everything” featuring everybody, and “Damn I’m Cold” ft. Lil Wayne show how great Bun B is at collaborating with all different kinds of artists. He has a couple tributes to Pimp C, with “Angel In The Sky” working really well and “Pop It 4 Pimp” not so much. Their collaboration with Chamillionaire, “Underground Thang”, is really great, and makes me hope that Pimp recorded enough verses for Bun to put out a CD of new UGK material.

“II Trill” is another stellar album that Bun B should be proud of. With Pimp C gone, it’ll be really hard for him to ever be as good as he was in UGK, but if this is as close as he comes, I’m happy with that. Great Bun B is better than 90% of other hip hop artists out there.

On the top floor of New York City club Spotlight Live, guests sipped drinks and dined on mini hamburgers as they prepared for the man of the hour to arrive. The crowd—from bloggers to magazine folk—were eager to get a first listen to UGK member Bun B’s new joint, II Trill. The listening party even brought out backpack rapper Talib Kweli, the legendary DJ Premier, and label impresario Kevin Liles, who posed for pictures in the middle of the disco ball-studded room.

Before the Texan rapper cued the DJ to throw on his record, he made his way towards the venue’s tiny stage, showing off his sparkling chain and black fitted with an orange “Houston” emblazoned across it. Bun kept it short and sweet on the mic, representing for his recently deceased UGK partner Pimp C by giving him a shout out. “This is a big moment for me,” he said as he stood on the stage by himself. “I don’t want to seem like I’m not nervous up here.”

If Bun was nervous, he didn’t show it. His new album shook the speakers as he made his way through the room to greet almost everyone in the spot, making sure they had a drink in their hand and asking what they thought about the tracks. The answers always seemed positive, and as it played in its entirety, II Trill revealed something for everyone: guest appearances by Lil Wayne, Mya, Lupe Fiasco, and Rick Ross, and neck-snapping beats from Clinton Sparks, Scott Storch, J.R. Rotem, and Chops.

1. “II Trill” featuring Z-Ro and J. Prince

Produced by Clinton Sparks

Bun takes the title of this hard-hitting track and puns on “II,” incorporating it into rhymes like “Got II many killers” and “You II close to the police.” Houston-based rapper Z-Ro and Rap-A-Lot CEO J. Prince construct rhymes in the same way, flowing over an ominous choral sample and some thwacking drums courtesy of Clinton Sparks.

2. “That’s Gangsta” featuring Sean Kingston

Produced by J.R. Rotem

This track is the first single off the album, and it fits snugly with its brash synthesizers, thin handclaps, and clanging bells. Bun outlines what it means to be a true gangsta, rapping “A gangsta can have that but he ain’t got to show it / ‘Cause with or without it, he’s still gangsta and you know it.” Sean Kingston croons on the catchy chorus, harmonizing in a way that makes you want to join in.

3. “Damn I’m Cold” featuring Lil Wayne

Produced by Chops

Weezy pops up on this mid-tempo banger with a flashy beat by Chops, a producer who has worked with Paul Wall and The Game. Over electric guitar twangs and an undercurrent of organ drones, the two MCs talk about their ice and trade off lines during the third chorus. Wayne hops on the vocoder for the chorus, singing smooth vocal trills that recall 2Pac’s “California Love.”

4. “You’re Everything” featuring Rick Ross, David Banner, and 8-Ball & MJG

Produced by Mr. Lee

Bun slows the pace down on this Southern posse cut, featuring a glittery candy background and a sample of Jodeci’s “Cry For You.” He makes note of the “bass kick-kickin” and each of the guest MCs steps up to the plate to match Bun’s drawling flow. Rick Ross sounds hoarse as he delivers his verse and 8-Ball follows Banner’s verse by cataloguing a slew of rappers from the South.

5. “Swang On ’Em” featuring Lupe Fiasco

Produced by Enigma

This banger is one of the best tracks on II Trill with a guest appearance from Lupe that will leave your head spinning. The song begins with a chopped vocal sample that repeats “We ride 22’s or better” throughout, and Bun addresses the listener by growling “I know you heard of me.” Lupe switches up his flow to match the rolling and punctual Southern style, peppering the tuba-laced beat with enough charisma to inspire listeners to pop this in their car stereos, drop the top, and cruise slowly around the block.

6. “I Luv That”

Produced by Scott Storch

The Storch beat makes “I Luv That” the perfect addition to a club DJ’s set list with its spacey, synth melody, and some shiny musical sparkles thrown in the mix. Bun keeps his raps focused on the ladies, using the chorus to chant, “The club is packed, the bottles is poppin’… You know we do it B-I-G, so come and holla at a playa.” This one will surely make all you club goers get busy on the dance floor.

7. “My Block” featuring Jazze Pha

Produced by Jazze Pha

Bun represents for his block on this bass-buzzing track, featuring some thick drums and a minor keyboard melody. He raps, “We don’t hustle cause we want to / ‘Cause we have to” and Jazze shows up on the chorus to chant “This is my block.” The track fades out with the squiggly noise featured on Ciara’s “1, 2 Step,” and Bun creates an anthem for anyone “from the West to the East” to big up their home turf.

8. “Get Cha Issue”

Produced by Bigg Tyme & Qwest

This funky song shows a more serious side of Bun, with some political raps about everything from sinners to crime to the war in Iraq. Bun raps, “Motherfuckers is dying out here / And police ain’t killing them” and “Bring motherfuckers back from Iraq.” Although he waxes political on this one, he makes his message clear as he chastises the irresponsible masses of the world.

9. “Good II Me” featuring Mya

Produced by Bigg Tyme / Co-Produced by Bun B and Intl Red

Rap-Up cover girl Mya delivers a sassy chorus on this battle of the sexes. Bun lets his lady know that he will give her whatever she wants to keep a smile on her face, rapping “If you want pasta, we’ll fly to Milan” and “Girl, anything you wish, I’ll make it come true.” Mya lets him know what really matters to a lady, singing “I don’t care what you did to them / Just be good to me,” breaking it down on the bridge that leads to some nasty guitar shredding at the end.

10. “Pop It 4 Pimp” featuring Lil’ Phatz and Webbie

Produced by Mouse

“Pop” has that signature down South sound, boasting burning synthesizers and a spiced-up sample of Juvenile’s “Back That Ass Up.” The track is a celebration and a call to all the women across the world, and Bun makes sure that “Las Vegas” and “H-Town” women “gon’ pop it 4 pimp.” Lil’ Phatz and Webbie shine on the chorus and provide a much diverse feel to the song.

11. “Underground Thang” featuring Pimp C and Chamillionaire

Produced by Cory Mo

Pimp C makes a posthumous appearance on this Latin-flavored future radio banger. Bun reinforces the fact that he rules in his domain, spitting “It’s an underground thang / ‘Cause I’m an underground king.” Cham sings in his gutsy baritone on the chorus and Pimp C raps in double-time, churning out lines like “Atlanta was a country,” giving this jam the UGK touch that its fans have come to love.

12. “If I Die 2Nite” featuring Lyfe Jennings & Young Buck

Produced by J-Rock

The beat features some rich piano hits, and Bun uses this track to show where his priorities lie, stating “I’d rather do a bid, at least they could see me behind glass.” Lyfe breaks it down on the hook, repeating “Baby feel my pain / Make sure my niggas ride for me,” making this song endearing as it is sincere.

13. “Another Soldier” featuring Mddl Fngz

Produced by DJ Khalil

Trembling organ notes mingle with a guitar bass line on “Another Soldier,” a group cut that features menacing rhymes from all of the rappers. Bun barks out “Bun B is drawing spit, while you six feet under” and “2 nines, 4 clips / Prayin’ that you niggas slip.” Later on the track, he rhymes, “Don’t ever play us for a joke / You’ll get your bitch ass smoked.” This one is as intimidating as it gets on the record.

14. “If It Was Up II Me” featuring Junior Reid

Produced by the BlackOut Movement

Junior Reid wails on the chorus like his does on The Game’s recent “One Blood,” crying out, “I see my people every day on the floor.” Bun discusses how the projects are a mess, pointing out the apathy in the hood and how “minds be collapsed.” He ends the track by talking about how it is time to educate the people and spend more time with the kids, stating that “since nobody else gon’ do it, it’ll have to be me.”

15. “Angel in the Sky” featuring Lil’ Razah

Produced by Cozmo

A soft piano begins this sentimental tribute to Bun’s fallen partner Pimp C. With a sample of Stevie Wonder’s “A Ribbon in the Sky,” Bun gets personal and deep by reminiscing about how it all began for UGK, admitting “You know I miss my friend / But he’s looking down from above,” and that “My heart still hurts.” He ends his verses by letting listeners know that “I still cry.” This is the most touching and emotionally honest Bun may have ever been on a song, and it could not be more elegant than this.

16. “Keep It 100”

Produced by Chops

II Trill’s closer is an anthematic and triumphant conclusion to this whopping record. Layers of synthesizers and hi-hats race as Bun chants, “All day and all night / Make that anytime you see me / I’ma keep it super tight.” He lets his fans and foes both know that “It’s UGK for life.” If this album is any indication, it’s that Bun B will keep the UGK name alive, solidifying his reign as the king of the underground, with or without his fallen brother.

[New Music] Miles Kurosky : An Apple for an Apple

Ex-Beulah crooner Miles Kurosky has himself a MySpace and a new song (and a bird). Tipster Ferg tells us other Beulah alum Bill Swann sent the link to the band's mailing list. And, as Kurosky writes in a post over at his MySpace titled "Cinco de Mayo 2008," with a Current Mood of "virginal": Hello Friends, it's May 5th and I'm officially on Myspace. How did I ever live without it??

Anyway, I've posted a song called "An Apple for an Apple." I think it's the final version, but who knows, it could change. Hopefully you all like it. That's all, XO, M. Nothing more needs be said. For those of you who miss the San Francisco E6-ers, it'll be a good reminder of those halcyon days, especially the mid-tune sing-a-long and continual build.

Former Beulah singer Miles Kurosky is back with a new song almost four years after the Elephant Six indie pop heroes called it quits. Fortunately for the now-defunct San Francisco band's faithful, "An Apple for an Apple" doesn't fall too far from the tree. What begins as childlike psych-folk, just sparkling acoustic-guitar arpeggios and Kurosky's internal rhymes, grows into a horns-boosted, strings-sweetened, fuzztone-chugging group singalong on a When Your Heartstrings Break scale, with crescendo after crescendo and martial drum rolls. The lyrics start with Monty Python before touching on religion, fond farewells, doubt, and falling in love with the invisible-- including disease, which makes the narrator feel alive. "Maybe I was just an easy mark," Kurosky sings. Tell that to all the Shins and New Pornographers fans who aren't yet familiar with Beulah, fans who might use this as an opportunity to explore another rewarding discography full of pretty melodies and arrangements that burst at the seams.

[New MV] Nelly feat. Fergie : Party People

New song frum Nelly off his new album Brass Knuckles...

The album will feature fourteen tracks as reported by USA Today.Nelly explained the reasoning for the title as "the best way" he can explain "how hard it's going to hit you."

Nelly has a range of featured guests lined up for Brass Knuckles, with appearances from Akon, Ashanti, Avery Storm, Babyface, Chuck D, Ciara, Fergie, LL Cool J, Lil Wayne, Pimp C, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, St. Lunatics, T.I. and Usher all confirmed.Jermaine Dupri also stated possibilities of hopeful collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Dupri gave a look into the two collaborations, one being Nelly, Carey and Jackson all appearing on the same track, in which he stated Nelly has laid the following blueprint:

Nelly's got a crazy collaboration he's trying to put together, which is him, Janet and Mariah Carey all on one song...That's what he wants. If he could convince them to do it, it would be crazy. He wants Janet to rap a 16-bar verse, he wants Mariah to sing the hook and he's gonna do two verses. He has it all planned out. You ask him about it! This is what he wants; he's 100-percent deadlocked into it. He went on to speak about the possibility of the Springsteen collaboration and that two of his own tracks will appear on the album,

Unfortunately for Nelly he was unable to get to collaborate with Springsteen as he was too busy around the world, though he if still hopefull to collaborate with him on a future album, or even a repackage of Brass Knuckles On March 30, Nelly told hiphopdx.com that "the album would feature a handful of new producers".

The first single was believed to be "Cut It Out" which features the late Pimp C and Sean P, of YoungBloodZ, but was later confirmed to be "Wadsyaname," which was released digitally on August 21, 2007. Because of pushed release dates from October 16 and on, the official first single has been changed to Party People. Nelly has recently recorded the Jermaine Dupri produced track "Stepped On My Js" featuring Ciara. Nelly describes the song as "'Air Force Ones' and 'Grillz' on steroids."

[Interview] The Veronicas :Twin sisters Twin Attach!

Just to clear things up, the Veronicas are twin sisters from Brisbane, Australia, and have nothing to do with Archie Comics' raven-haired rich-girl Veronica Lodge or teen TV sleuth Veronica Mars.

In fact, neither of them is even named Veronica, nor do they know anyone with the name, all of which kind of begs the question: Why go with "the Veronicas" anyway?

"The name is something we thought about for a long time, and we wanted it to be a girl's name, but we didn't want it to be 'the Jesses,' " guitarist Jess Origliasso laughed. "We were very conscious of not wanting to make it a twin thing, because we think that's really tacky."

"We didn't want it to be called 'the Lisas,' either," singer Lisa Origliasso added. "So one day we saw the movie 'Heathers,' and there's a line where one girl asks, 'Are you a Heather?' and Winona Ryder's character answers, 'No, I'm a Veronica,' and so we went with that, because she was this kind of cool, unique chick with an attitude."

And attitude is one thing the Veronicas have in spades. At the age of 5, the Origliasso sisters enrolled in an after-school musical theatre club, but after a few years of toiling away in low-budget revues of "Godspell" and "Hair," they ditched the club and decided to get serious. They took private voice lessons and for the next several years put in time playing gigs in Brisbane and around Australia's Gold Coast

"We were getting tired of just doing nothing, and we figured that there was no better way to get experience than getting out there in front of people when you're that young," Jess said. "We were just kind of thrust out there and forced to make it

By the time they were 14, the sisters were playing covers of Elvis and Roy Orbison tunes, and making an honest-to-goodness living on the Australian festival circuit. And when Jess got a guitar for her 18th birthday, the Veronicas began banging out original songs, brief three-chord blurts that eventually found their way into the right hands. By the time they were 19, the Origliasso sisters had signed Engine Room, the Australian production team responsible for making the Vines bright (yet fleeting) international stars.

"They take Australian talent overseas, develop it and try to get a major label to pick them up," Lisa explained. "So we were really lucky to sign with them. They sent us over the top."

Or, more precisely, they sent them all around the world, to work with pop maestros like Sweden's Max Martin (Britney Spears, 'NSYNC) and Germany's Toby Gad (Milli Vanilli, Enrique Iglesias). And, after a year on the road, the Veronicas returned home with more than 60 songs and a contract with Sire Records.

Now, having just turned 20, they're prepping their debut album, The Secret Life of ... the Veronicas, a slippery, shiny mix of angsty lyrics and guitar solos, and they've just been tapped by Calvin Klein to be the faces of the designer's fall fashion campaign. It's the beginning stages of a full-fledged rock-and-roll invasion, and it's a whole lot cooler than anything their friends back in Brisbane are currently up to.

"We used to be jealous of all our friends who were just taking it easy while we were rehearsing and stuff," Lisa said. "But now were playing gigs while they're working at Mackey's."

"They don't say 'Mackey's' over here," Jess pointed out.

"Oh, right. Sorry. 'Mackey's' is Micky D's, McDonald's," Lisa laughed. "Sorry about that. That was my Australianess coming out."

[New Album Review] Hook Me Up

There is an old cliché phrase I was once taught that said: “If you go into something thinking it’s going to be bad, then it’s going to be bad. However, if you go into something with a positive attitude, then it will turn out well”. I would now like to condemn whoever it was that taught me this. On the back of the highly infectious title track/lead single, I was genuinely excited for the new album from former tween sensations The Veronicas, Hook Me Up. With any luck it wouldn’t be like their previous effort, The Secret Life Of…, which became incredibly lacklustre after the first four tracks (all of which, must be pointed out, were commercially released singles).

So, upon listening to the album, the questions have to be put. Is the album better than its predecessor? The answer is yes. Does it feature a new sound and direction for the Orglissano twins? Yes again. But have the Veronicas made a great album because of this? Sadly, no. Far from it. Hook Me Up is a disappointing album, filled with half-baked ideas and ignoring its potential to be a great pop album- or, even, a great dance album.

“Untouched” is an admittedly great opening track, featuring everything that is good about this album. A bizarre alt-pop wave of synths, string section sampling and dissonant guitar, with motor-mouth vocals in the verse, leading up to a great hook in the chorus. This fades out and right into “Hook Me Up”, the lead single and easily the best song on the album. At first, chances are you may not like it (I know that when I first heard it, I hated it). But the best thing about this song is how damn infectious it is, thus making it an excellent pop song with top harmonies and a synth hook Hellogoodbye would be envious of. The one-two punch of this song and the title track prove how good this album could have been. Unfortunately, it’s mostly downhill from here.

The next two tracks either suffer from trying to be too much at once (“This Is How It Feels”), and generally not going anywhere (“This Love”). It’s certainly a departure from the guitar pop-rock of their previous album, but it appears not all change is good in this case. As the album progresses from here, you can’t help but get the feeling that the band really need to pull a rabbit out of their hat. And while they certainly come close to it- “I Can’t Stay Away” features some lively beats, and “All I Have” features come catchy moments, live drums (exactly what this album needed more of), and some very cool use of a vocoder- but there is just too much filler and lazy song writing. Songs like “I Don’t Wanna Wait” and “In Another Life” both have great potential, but the best parts of the song aren’t furthered to make for a better overall.

And then there’s “Popular”- what can be said about this one? Basically, if Peaches went out and got completely hammered with Princess Superstar and they managed to have some kind of inbred lovechild with “Best Damn Thing”-era Avril Lavigne as the midwife, it would probably come out sounding something like this. And believe me, this is definitely not a compliment. Talking about the song, the girls say that the song is “taking the piss out of famous people”. However, in a similar vein to Good Charlotte atrocity “I Just Wanna Live”, you simply cannot tell and it comes off as vain and cheap.

It’s good that, at the very least, the Veronicas have gone for something different from the pop market at the moment. But it’s a bitter letdown that, even after all this change, most of the songs just aren’t very good. Not even the fantastic single can save this one. A pity, really, given how good this album could have been.

For fans only- though chances are you may not be much of a fan after this record, even if you were before.

[Review] RICK ROSS BOSS Ft. T-PAIN : TRILLA Att.MV & DOWNLOADS

Rick Ross - Trilla
Album Review by: John Burnett

I've come to a disheartening and perplexing conclusion. I—like many rap heads—am addicted to crack rap. After mad years of hearing the same embellished Tony Montana motifs play out over different beats I still enjoy hearing properly executed rhymes about the wanton exploits of your respective neighborhood medicine man. And judging from the sales that are attached to some of these coke-laden rap discs, so do you. The narrator on this occasion happens to be Rick Ross and the cinematic experience is Trilla.

Based off of Port of Miami, I predicted two things for what I’d hear on Trilla. There was going to be some dope beats and probably a few (much sarcasm intended) references to coke. I was right about both but there was also an added bonus. Coming out on the back end, I’ve come to the realization either Rick Ross acquired an ill ghostwriter or dude’s flow has vastly improved. On the Bink! produced (and eerily Roc-A-Fella nostalgia inducing) “We Shinin’” I caught a surprise blow to the chin by the quote “am I a target for police because I puff E/not an artist I’m regarded as a Puffy/like a pimp I’mma skip past a Kim Porter/like a pimp order, pimp, I import her.” I mean this is Rick Ross right? The flow doesn’t fall off either with Ross tucked neatly between the church-like organs and wailing sample. Then there’s the literal gangster role call provided on the “Trilla Intro” where Ross oddly proclaims he’s rhyming with kush and lean on his breath. In the most sinister way possible Ross gruffly barks “I don’t give a fuck about death/cause death don’t give a fuck about flesh/cause flesh don’t give a fuck about mine/and never gave fuck about mine.”

[Review] R.E.M. - Accelerate att. MV & Download

It's still a dog : R.E.M. find hope despite the (recent) times.

There's a well worn concept in music criticism - one probably applied more rigidly to rock than anywhere else - known as 'the career arc'. Variations can be found, but the most commonly utilised version follows thusly:

a) underground darlings
b) slow move to alt.mainstream / mainstream-mainstream recognition
c) big album explosion / 'biggest band in the world'
d) more 'selective' appeal / shadow of artistic and/or commercial self
e) honorary elders of rock, feted for growing old gracefully.

Whilst there is also many an example you could use to illustrate this, it could be argued that - at least currently - R.E.M. represent the condition more so than most. The real question is, can they finally tick box e, having struggled trapped in box d (at least on record) for the best part of a decade. Before I bore you with what will probably be another precis of what has brought about that decade of artistic inertia, without indulging once again my theories on critical revisionism (or how we crap on those who have served us best for the slightest errant move), I do need to admit that personally I will put the Murmur to Automatic For The People run up there with pretty much any decade long run of albums you care to mention. I'd also contend that New Adventures in Hi-Fi, a vastly underrated album then and now, would have extended that run had it not been predeced by the self-consciously glam/grunge hybrid that was Monster (not a bad record in itself, but certainly strained and contrived in areas).

What is also true however, is that the real monster that has dogged the latter part of the band's career has been the departure of Bill Berry in 1997, and the inescapable ceasura it created between the light and the shade of their output. The first three albums the triumvirate R.E.M. put out have seen a band floundering, unsure of where to go, of who to be, of exactly what that band is now supposed to represent. Up and Reveal would have both made good 5 or 6 track ep's, characterised as they both were by distinct high points surrounded by muddled lethargy. Stick Leaving New York and The Ascent Of Man (from the otherwise dreary and anaemic Around The Sun) on, and you could cobble together a good post-Berry R.E.M. sampler - but still something well below that which went before.

So now they're back. Again. With another new modus operandi designed to kick start the creative motors, embodied by the 'live rehearsal' week in Dublin last year. The fact that those shows, and the new songs aired within, were greeted with no short measure of positivity bode well, but then again, R.E.M.'s live chops have never really been in question. It's actually all about how - IF - they could take this new impetus and allow it to invigour and embolden them in the studio, rather than be hamstrung once more by the studio environment. Let's face it, making an off-the-cuff, punky, live sounding record can end up sounding utterly contrived if not handled correctly.

The album is, from the off, fast and furious, (except in the areas where it's fucking fast, and the odd part which is a bit slower). Opener Living Well Is The Best Revenge comes out of the speakers like it's just shot Marvin in the face, a bastard cousin of Iggy's Funtime, the intro all Buck's razor-edged jangles, and Mills' high end bass notes tumbling and cascading down the scale, as Stipe's declamatory hollering bashes its way through. Man-sized Wreath follows a similar path, with shears of guitar underpinning the verses, before the chorus bounces in with Mills' long harmonising "Ah"'s perfectly underscoring the chorus and its exultation of 'kicking out on the dancefloor like you just dont care'. Michael...I've seen you dance......

One of the frustraions of the R.E.M. of the last 10 years has been that the lead singles have been false promises - Imitation Of Life, Daysleeper, and Leaving New York promised much and the rest delivered little. Certainly Supernatural Superserious meets the first criteria, another perfect choice for a lead track, not as intense and rasping as much of the rest of the album, but ebullient and melodic. The sombre piano opening of Hollow Man does give you the willies a bit, puts the "Shit the bed lads, not again" monkey in the room, but its a great false start, its simplicity and shifts in pace offering patches of breath from the overall rush without losing the momentum.

Houston introduces more shifts of pace as we hit the mid-section of the record, takes the pace down, mixing high end organ with low, coarsing guitar, reminiscent of the cello on Sweetness Follows. There is an obvious reference to open with ('if the storm doesn't kill me the government will'), Stipe the polemicist back, but the actual song taps into a more personal sense ('I've got to get that out of my head'), a perspective of and from the south of America, not dwelling on the damage the politicians did in the aftermath of Katrina. Yes it is bluntly acknowledging that damage but spends more time on, however cliched it might sound, the spirit of the people and places Stipe connects with, strong in the face of the weakness and disregard of their leaders, the strength of the associations he has with the places winning out over the desolation -

'Houston is filled with promise....And Galveston sings like that song that I loved
It's meaning has not been erased...' .

Similar pronouncements are made on Until The Day Is Done ; think the undulating acoustic guitar of Swan Swan H, the deep atmospherics of Drive, but without the layers and layers that you might have come to expect over recent years, allowing full rein to Stipe's treatise on how 'the verdict is dire, the country's in ruins / providence blinked facing the sun' - this contexting of 'providence', the foreseeing care and guidance of God or nature over the creatures of the earth, which 'America Inc.' specifically reserves for itself above any other, damns the gap illuminated between what is projected, and what actually is. Mr.Richards follows on and makes something out of the wasted melody that made up Chorus and the Ring, a tepid drawl from Reveal, and continues its examination of the body politic, reminding the titluar every-politician that 'you're mistaken if you think we'll just forget.... Pay attention...we know what's going on'.

Sing for the Submarine stands out due to being more dense and obtuse, with an instrumental breakdown akin to something Comets On Fire would work out for about half an hour, all mountainous drums and searing guitars, falling into a plucked, doleful resolution. Lyrically its more of Stipe's opacity, but punctuated with telling self references to 'electron blue', how he can 'feel gravity's pull' and 'the world as we know it, the high speed train, we'll pick it all up and start again'. The relative calm is forgotten with the closing tracks however ; Horse To Water is a flail of crunching guitars and breakneck drums, and closer I'm Gonna DJ is daffy and teasingly throwaway, but perhaps, given its recent tenure in the R.E.M. live set is a testament to how much the live experience has informed this record - so why not finish it in the same way. And then its all over, in just over half an hour! I'd defy most to not just put it on again. And again.....

Accelerate is a wonderful balance of nods, glances and in some places heavy leaps towards former glories, but ones imbued with a confidence and belief that produce R.E.M.'s most cohesive record since Automatic..., their ballsiest record since Life's Rich Pageant. It's no blithe patchwork of old references, more a joyous celebration of the freeing potency of reconnection, both the nub of the problem and the epiphanous movement forward being best described in the title track, which has riding on top of its juggernauting drums and excoriating guitars lines such as 'Where is the rip cord, the trap door, the key?
Where is cartoon escape hatch for me?
No time to question the choices I make
I've got to fall in another direction....accelerate'.

Thankfully, eventually, they've only just gone and cracked it haven't they - and cracked it hard! Yes, they have done so by tapping into their past, but in doing so have released themselves from that fruitless identity quest they were on, and have discovered that what was important about the Stipe quote of 1998 , "A three legged dog is still a dog, it just has to learn to run differently", was not the latter part but the former. It's still a dog, its ability to run is instinctive. R.E.M. forgot what they were due to assumptions that they would have learn to be something different in order to survive. They have reminded not only us, but themselves why they were, and thankfully are once more, such an important band.

[NEW Artist] YELLE :when Lily Allen meet M.I.A. & Nelly Furtado!

Yelle(the last “e” is silent) is not just another hipster chick in leg warmers and lamé (even though she’s partial both). The French electro hip-pop tart’s got the blogosphere appropriately atwitter over her spazzy live performances, aerobics-inspired videos and intentionally low-budget (think cable-access) ’80s steez, despite the fact that she hasn’t even released an album in the States yet.

When, like us, you don’t speak French, Yelle — think Lily Allen’s snark meets M.I.A.’s wardrobe meets Nelly Furtado’s flirt factor — who’s got the makings of a modern-day European Blondie, sounds like she’s just engaging in universal boy-issue lament set to hyper computerized blips and beeps and Casio beats.

But beneath the retro patina and language barrier lay raunchy, NC-17 lyrics about matters of… “size,” (zut alors!), sex toys, and girl-on-girl action, coated with a sweet gloss of poppy saccharine.

After opening for Mika, and dropping her French debut,Pop-Up, she’s about to release her album stateside and go from music blog footnote to center stage when she plays Coachella this spring.

Pennywise album will be free for two weeks

The band's “Reason to Believe" will be free for two weeks.

It's been a long, loud journey for Pennywise. The Southern California punk stalwarts released their debut album 17 years ago on Epitaph Records and went on to rack up 3 million CDs sold worldwide. This week, they release their ninth collection as a true 21st century endeavor: "Reason to Believe" finds the Hermosa Beach punks partnering with MySpace Records, and the 14-track album will be offered free to fans for two weeks beginning Tuesday.

"It's a brave new world in the music industry," lead singer Jim Lindberg said last week during a break from rehearsals.

Bands used to fret over the cover art for their album; now they wrestle with decisions about the price of their album and their path to the marketplace. All eyes were on Radiohead a few months ago with their pay-what-you-want model online followed by a physical CD release. And Lindberg said he was intrigued by Elvis Costello's recent announcement that he would put out an album on vinyl that would come with a download voucher tucked inside. "I'm not really the person that downloads and listens on portable devices or a computer, that's not how I enjoy my music. But a lot of people do, and this approach we're doing will really connect with a lot of new people."

It's a significant project for MySpace, which will be putting its considerable network propulsion behind a free full album from a name band for the first time. Pennywise's new single, "The Western World," is already getting heavy rotation on KROQ-FM (106.7). (Epitaph will release the album jointly with MySpace Records in Europe and Australia.)

Pennywise (which has Fletcher Dragge on guitar, Byron McMackin on drums, Randy Bradbury on bass) got its start as a backyard lark in 1988. Lindberg said the turmoil and opportunity of the music industry today can be unsettling, but the band is just happy to be as loud as ever. "We all expected to need day jobs a long time ago."

Pennywise is playing the Key Club on Thursday.

Yael Naim : Israeli singer embraces Britney, Apple for success

By Christine Kearney

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Folksy French-Israeli singer Yael Naim found commercial success after her song "New Soul" played in Apple's MacBook Air laptop ads, pushing the song to No. 7 on U.S. music chart Billboard's Hot 100.

She already had gained fame for what some saw as a comic choice to cover pop singer Britney Spear's "Toxic," singing a soulful, poignant version of the commercial hit while playing piano.

But Naim, 29, whose self-titled new album was just released in the United States two months earlier than originally planned following the success of the Apple ad, says she's not worried about being seen as too commercial.

"It opened a great window for us, for a lot of people to have a chance to hear about our music," she told Reuters in New York. "We had a lot of propositions ... but we thought Apple and Macintosh have some connection because today we work with computers to do our music."

The singer-songwriter, who was born in Paris but spent a large part of her childhood in Israel, recorded her new album in her Paris apartment with her music partner, percussionist David Donatien.

"We did not have a label," she said. "We did not have a lot of money so we did it just with a computer."

NAME HALVED

She became disillusioned with the "big studio" experience after her first album "In a Man's Womb" was released in 2001 through EMI, which insisted she keep her name to just Yael.

"It was like they took half of my energy," she said.

Both "Toxic" and "New Soul" appear on her new, second album, which was recorded in English, Hebrew and French and has received warm reviews. Rolling Stone magazine noted: "The way Naim purrs any word with a hard 'ch' will make your loins tingle."

Naim, who spent two years in the Israel Air Force Orchestra, said she was surprised audiences in France had embraced the mixed-language album.

"I did not think anyone would want to listen to ballads in Hebrew," she said. "It is not considered a very sexy language."

She also didn't expect the success of her version of "Toxic," which Rolling Stone described as "a stripped-down, slow-motion, kinda-brilliant cover."

"I don't particularly like her (Spears) as a musician, the voice, but this song is a good song," she said. "I wanted to take something that is completely opposite of the music we do."

Audiences at live shows, such as one last week in Manhattan, react excitedly to "Toxic," as well as to her current hit.

She confided to the crowd of several hundred that she once believed she was an old soul.

"Then my real life began and I figured that maybe I'm not an old soul," she said before launching into "New Soul."
