Maysa - Metamorphosis New album for JAZZ sensation

Out today across the USA, ‘Metamorphosis’ is the seventh solo CD from singing sensation Maysa Leak. Variously produced by Rex Rideout, Chris ‘Big Dog’ Davis and the Jason Miles – DJ Logic pairing of Global Noize it offers twelve sumptuous tracks that ooze sophistication and which feature notable contributions from some of the leading contemporary jazz session players around today.

This is particularly well demonstrated by the opening track ‘Simpatico’ where thumping bass from Melvin Davis and the drums of Michael White provide a rhythmic platform from which Leak proffers her soulful tones. It’s a number on which Rex Rideout, both as producer and keyboard player, really excels and much the same can be said of Chris Davis with ‘Take Me Away’ where Maysa seamlessly blends a cool sample of Jean Carn’s ‘Don’t Let It Go To Your Head’ into this emotional smoker. Of course since the early nineties, when she auditioned for the band by phone, Maysa has been famous for being one of the voices of Incognito. The complex yet compelling ‘Happy Feelings’ evokes her best Incognito moments as does ‘Never Really Ever’ for which Rex Rideout again plays a part. Both tracks contrast nicely with the gentle deconstructed splendour of ‘Love So True’ while also in turned down mode is the silkily soulful ‘I Need A Man’.

Earlier this year producer and keyboard player Jason Miles collaborated with DJ Logic on a project they named Global Noize. Here Leak taps into their hip rhythmic and eclectic style with ‘A Conversation With The Universe’ that she co-writes and performs with them. The tune’s world vibe represents a tasty departure from the Maysa norm and when, with ‘Walk Away’, she finds the ideal R & B ballad it’s a cool arrangement from Ledisi that incorporates a stunning brass infused play out line which comes courtesy of Melvin Jones on trumpet.

Dedicated to her mother and co-written by Leak, Rideout and the excellent Michael Ripoll, ‘Grateful’ is illuminated by Ripoll’s wonderful acoustic guitar and when Maysa turns to Najee on flute for ‘My Destiny’ he strikes the perfect chord with which to complement her picture perfect delivery. Najee is joined by Nick Colionne for ‘Higher Love’ where together they weave some exquisitely jazzy patterns that underpin Leak’s zesty Latin tinged vocal and Colionne returns to lead off what proves to be a staggering three minute ten second guitar introduction to the outstanding ‘Lets Figure It Out’. In the expert hands of producer Chris Davis this superb slice of chill out music evolves both into a feisty dance floor filler and the album’s best track.

‘Metamorphosis’ is an impressive collection of all-original material that may well be the album to take Maysa to the next level of appreciation. Check it out.

Rihanna More HOT in Disturbia Music Video

The new music video from R 'n' B singer Rihanna for her latest single "Disturbia" has finally been premiered on July 21. The clip was shot in Los Angeles starting from June 29 under the helm of renown director David LaChapelle, who has also worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani before.

The new video seems trying to capture the meaning of the song by picturing a dark and disturbing people's behavior. Rihanna herself was shot in some different background on the clip, such as being trapped in a cage, singing and dancing inside a bed frame and sitting on a chair with her hand and leg chained.

The song itself is one of the new tracks that were included on Rihanna's latest repackaged LP "Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded", that was dropped on June 17. "Disturbia" is also a special track for the R 'n' B singer as it was actually written by her rumored boyfriend Chris Brown with the help of two of his friends Andre Merritt and Robert Allen. Before releasing "Disturbia", Rihanna has already spawned two other singles, "Take A Bow" and "If I Never See Your Face Again" featuring Maroon 5.

Beside promoting her re-released LP, the "Umbrella" hit maker reportedly has already had an idea for a new studio album. Previously in an interview, the singer stated that she wants to work with Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and Duffy on her new record.

Update 2008-07-24: According to Def Jam's official site the video is directed by Anthony Mandler, who also direct Rihanna's "Take A Bow". Rihanna's "Disturbia" Video Premiere:

Jennifer Hudson : New Debut singel "SPOTLIGTH"

About JENNIFER HUDSON

Growing up on the south side of Chicago IL, Jennifer started singing in the church choir at the age of seven. For Jennifer, emoting inspirational gospel is the cornerstone of her beginnings as a talented singer, "the church is my favorite place to sing. My first solo was "Must Jesus Bare The Cross Alone." She attributes her vocal ability to her dear late maternal grandmother, Julia Kate Hudson, who was an avid churchgoer and also sang in the choir. Throughout grammar and high school, Jennifer cultivated & showcased her talent by participating in a host of local talent shows and musicals. During this time she also performed at various clubs, weddings and benefits in Chicago and surrounding areas.

In the Fall of 2002 Jennifer successfully auditioned for one of the Disney Cruise ships and landed her first major role as "Calliope", the head muse on the "Disney Wonder" line the ran from February 2003 through August of 2003 Jennifer loved her time performing on the ship and considers herself a member of the Disney family and was thrilled to be able to do what she loves to do, stating, "singing for thousands of people, and to be paid to do this, its amazing!." Taking a leap of faith, Jennifer consciously decided not to renew her contract with Disney; instead she flew to Atlanta to audition for the Fox hit reality show, American Idol: Season 3 in August 2003.
Amongst 70,000 hopefuls Jennifer was a stand out choice as a top 12 competitor. She wowed the idol judges and viewers spanning across the globe with great performances of classic songs by icons such as Aretha Franklin & Whitney Houston. As judge Randy Jacksons Wild Card pick, Jennifers journey with American Idol accelerated her to the 7th position. Viewer response to her early departure was quite controversial and unprecedented and sent shockwaves across America as well as unleashing a torrent of criticism about the idol voting process. During her time in the "Top 12", she received high praise from some of musics biggest industry legends. Sir Elton John was quoted as saying she was "the best of the lot". The deep, rich, powerful, classic texture of Jennifer Hudsons voice continues to touch everyone that hears her sing. In response to hearing Jennifers incredible range during the competition preparation for his very own classic, "Weekend In New England" Barry Manilow stated "My catalog of songs requires that you have range, you cannot do what Jennifer is doing, she takes it to a whole other level.". Movie director Quentin Tarentino was also enchanted by hearing Jennifers powerful rendition of the Whitney Houston song "I Have Nothing" from the mega hit soundtrack "The Bodyguard". Quentin states "Hudson takes on Houston and WINS!" Although Jennifer did not win the idol crown she left an indelible mark on the music industry and viewers across the world.

After the show ended the top 10 finalists embarked on a 48 city tour and Jennifer received critical praise for her performances from many of the local newspapers covering the event. Being voted off was an initial disappointment but reaction to her departure yielded much unprecedented coverage that includes a duet with Barry Manilow on "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" who also invited her to sing on tour with him, heavy spotlighting from Entertainment Tonight & other entertainment news intrigued to interview Jennifer as well as a guest spot on David Lettermans Top 10 List. Of her idol experience Jennifer has this to say, "I have learned a lot," she said. "It's been the biggest experience of my life. "It's just a blessing from God to just be able to use my talent to make my living - to be on American Idol and be on stage."

Post "Idol" life for Jennifer Hudson has been very rewarding. She has performed at several important benefit concerts, including a performance in the hit Broadway musical "Hair". Jennifer makes it no secret that she has a strong interest in the stage and has received rave reviews from established stage performers after her stand out delivery of "Easy To Be Hard", which she has recorded for an ensemble cast HAIR benefit album, due for release in early 2005. Ms. Hudson was also invited to perform at an event in her hometown along side such notable acts as Destinys Child, Kanye West and others. Jennifer debuted an original song entitled "Stand Up", which has since been strongly supported & requested on radio and has already created a buzz on the internet.

With a 5 octave range, Jennifer has been compared to legendary voices such as Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, and Jennifer Holiday. What you heard from Jennifer on American Idol was only a sliver of her vocal ability. Listeners should be excited to hear what she has to offer. Jennifers voice is a throwback to powerful old school performers. Back when singers could sang. There is a duality in Jennifers voice that listeners will find very pleasing. She has the prowess to deliver an old soul classic but can just as easily woo you with a big power ballad that made many of todays musical stars famous.

In November 2005, Hudson was cast in the prized role of Effie White, the role originally created in a legendary Broadway performance by Jennifer Holliday, for the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls. Hudson has won particular praise for her show-stopping onscreen rendition of the hit song, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going". As Effie White, Hudson has garnered twenty-nine awards from film critics as Best Supporting Actress and Breakthrough Performer of 2006. She won the Golden Globe Award as Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In addition, she has been named Best Supporting Actress by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and also by the Screen Actors Guild. On February 7, 2007, Hudson was named Best Supporting Actress and Best Breakthrough Performance by the Black Reel Awards, awarded by the Foundation For The Advancement Of African-Americans In Film. On February 25, 2007, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film. At 25 years old, Hudson became the eighth youngest winner of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. She became only the third African-American to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Jennifer also became the fourth African-American actress to win an acting award in Oscar history. She was also the first African-American to win an Oscar for her screen debut. Currently, she is also the only person to have gone from participating in a reality television series to becoming an Academy Award winner. In November 2006, Hudson signed a record deal with Arista Records and is currently working on her debut album which is scheduled for release the first quarter of 2008

Mary J. Blige : Breakthrough

About Mary

Over the course of 15 years, with a voice that is rough and ready, sweet and pure, Mary J. Blige is capable of conveying heartache and happiness in a single musical phrase. A confessional singer, her emotional honesty reflects the great traditions of blues and soul with a ripped-from-the-pages-of-your-diary immediacy that has won her countless honors and a devoted, ever-growing audience around the world.

Nobody tells it like Mary. She delivers fan-pleasing, trademark, straight-up messages to players, cheaters and fools with serenity, conviction and compassion.
Nobody tells it like Mary. She delivers fan-pleasing, trademark, straight-up messages to players, cheaters and fools with serenity, conviction and compassion.

Wilson Louis from Miami, FL asked: Compared to all your other albums, what's different about Breakthrough? Mary J: "The Breakthrough is different because I am no longer going around the pain of self-healing and slowly healing. I'm quick to looking at what's wrong and i try to fix it."

Hope Woodson from New Haven, CT asked: What was your inspiration for "Be Without You"? Are you going through what you are singing? Mary J: "Yes, I always go through this because our personalities are different and sometimes will clash and misunderstand each other, which causes arguments, but I'd rather be with him as long as he respects me."

Felisa Wallace from Detroit, MI asked:
What is your favorite song from your new album? Mary J: "I have 4: "Good Woman Down", "Enough Crying", "Take Me As I Am", and "Baggage".

Matthew Bavotto from St. Paul, MN asked:
Who is your favorite artist? Favorite album? Mary J: "Don't have one. Have way too many to name."

Niema Darod from Northolt, England asked: My mum loves you and wants to know how you keep so fit and young?! Mary J: "Praying for the strength to have the willpower to train daily and diet. Resting and lots of water." Levar Lewis from Virginia asked: What is your diet like? Mary J: "Not starving myself. Six small lite meals a day and they all include brown rice or wheat bread."

DeMetria Moaning from Boley, Oklahoma asked:
How do you keep it hot after so many years on the scene? How do you keep up the style evolution? Mary J: "Be myself and nobody else. And wear what works for me and not for someone else."

Antonette from Los Angeles asked:
Who inspired you to start singing? How did you start your career and what advice do you have for an aspiring singer? Mary J: "People in my neighborhood inspired me to sing. Believe in your ability no matter what, but be realistic with yourself and your ability."

Geneva from Bronx, N.Y. asked:
Some women, such as myself, listen to music when they have a bad day. What do you do to relax? Mary J: "I lay down and pray and ask God for forgiveness if I've done anything to anyone, then I forgive everyone else for hurting me."

D. Rose from Dallas, TX asked: Through all your struggles, what or who kept you motivated to face another day? Mary J: "My fans and God!!"

Thabo from East London asked:
What motivates your to write and sing such beautiful deep soulful songs? Mary J: "Life and trials."

Rasheeda from Bridgetown, Barbados asked: Do you regret anything you've done in your career? Mary J: "No, I've learned so much from all my mistakes. I just wish I had gotten my education."

Angel Mcclurken from Greensboro, NC asked:
What is the one thing that you think about everyday that keeps you going and gives you that extra push? Mary J: "God loves me and sent his son to die for me so I have to live to please him because he saved me when everyone abandoned me."

Overview New Album

At the end of 2005, Mary J. Blige's career was supposed to be anthologized. The singer had her way, however, and one of her best studio albums came out instead. In retrospect, her previous album, 2003's Love & Life, was awkward; the P. Diddy collaborations, likely intended to recapture the magic the duo put together on What's the 411? and My Life, didn't always pay off, and Blige was about to become a wife, so the songs steeped in heartbreak and disappointment weren't delivered with as much power as they had been in the past. The Breakthrough also contains some of the drama that fans expect, despite Blige's continued happiness, but it's clear that she has gained enough distance from the uglier parts of her past that she can inhabit them and, once again, deliver those songs. The past does play a significant role in the album, as in "Baggage," where she apologies to her husband for bringing it into their relationship. "Father in You" sounds like a note-perfect facsimile of a classic soul ballad, rising and falling and twisting with a sensitive string arrangement, but the lyrics are pure Blige, acknowledging the ways in which her husband has made up for the absence of her father. On the nearly anthemic "Good Woman Down," she sees a less matured version of herself in young women and uses her experiences to advise. She jacks the beat from the Game's "Hate It or Love It" for "MJB da MVP," where she reflects on her career, thanks her supporters, and reasserts her rightful position as the soul hip-hop queen. It's one of several tracks to beam with a kind of contentment and confidence that Blige has never before possessed. Take "Can't Hide from Love," where she's such a force that Jay-Z dishes out a quick introduction and knows to stay out of the way for the remainder of the track, or the glorious "I Found My Everything," her "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." Beat for beat, the album features the best round of productions Blige has been handed since the mid-'90s. Apart from only a couple lukewarm tracks and a poorly recorded version of "One" with U2, it is completely correct. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

GIRLICIOUS

PUSSYCAT DOLLS PRESENT: GIRLICIOUS made the dreams of four young female hopefuls a reality when judges Robin Antin, Lil’ Kim and Ron Fair announced them as members of the newly formed recording group, Girlicious, on the season finale of The CW’s music/reality series last night.

Tiffanie Anderson, 18, of Los Angeles, California; Nichole Cordova, 18, of Houston, Texas; Natalie Mejia, 19, of Diamond Bar, California and Chrystina Sayers, 20, of San Diego, California beat out thousands of girls to become part of Girlicious. Originally, Girlicious was planned as a three-person group, but judges decided the four finalists were so good together that the group was expanded. Signed to Geffen Records, the girls have already recorded their first album and filmed their first music video. The group’s first single and music video, “Like Me,” made its world premiere following the airing of the finale episode. Though the reality show recently ended, the girls have been recording their debut album, “Girlicious,” since fall of 2007, which is scheduled to drop on July 1.

Looking for singers with dance ability and superstar charisma, Antin and Geffen Records Chairman Ron Fair launched a nationwide search for the most talented girls in America. Fifteen finalists were chosen to compete for a spot in the new group and the opportunity to go from obscurity to international stardom.

Thousands of girls lined up with the dream of landing one of three coveted spots in the new band Girlicious. Each week the girls had to sing, dance and practice choreography with Antin and Pussycat Dolls co-choreographer Mikey Minden, as well as perfect their vocal techniques to impress the judges.

[New MusicVideo] Jay Sean : Maybe

"Maybe" MusicVideo Release 21th April 2008!

Jay Sean is back, fresh from scooping two awards at the UK Asian Music Awards 2008, with new single "Maybe" to follow his smash hit "Ride It", out on 2Point9/Jayded April 21st.

A smooth, mid-tempo slab of olde skool, 80`s pure groove R`n`B, it`s produced by teenage West London production crew Sampson Productions.

Jay has taken the creative reigns with his new album - My Own Way - after a falling out with his record company. At first I didn't feel that it was a good move, but after the first two singles being very solid, maybe it was a good idea after all.

Maybe is another contemporary R&B track that shows off Jay's ability to compete with a very American dominated market. The video is pretty standard & serves the track well, although I liked his last single - Ride It - a little more than this one, it is still a great tune.

The UK scene has come on leaps & bounds over the last 6 - 12 months & it is a really exciting time to be a part of the new sound. With Bassline & UK R&B exploding into the national charts, things can only get better.
