Gym Class Heroes : New Album "The Quilt" and New Single " Cookie Jar"

The kings of alternative hip-hop, Gym Class Heroes, have announced the release of their third album, ‘The Quilt’.

Gym Class Heroes are eyeing September for the release of their third album 'The Quilt'.

First on the release schedule is the single 'Cookie Jar', available as a digital download on July 8th, with the album following on September 9th in the U.S. - a UK date is not yet known.

Speaking of 'The Quilt', it has emerged that contributions come from Estelle and Busta Rhymes, while production was handled by The Dream, Cool & Dre and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.

Produced by The Dream, Cool & Dre and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump and featuring guest contributions from Estelle, Busta Rhymes and the legendary Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates, ‘The Quilt’ features a number of high profile collaborators on the release.

The album will be released on September 9th via Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen in the US preceded by the single, ‘Cookie Jar’, which will be available for digital purchase beginning July 8th.

Hot Off the Relative Success Of Their Last Album, Gym Class Heroes Are Already Prepping The Release Of Their Next Project - The Quilt. Here Is the Lead Single, Featuring The-Dream, It Is Entitled - Cookie Jar.

The first thing that hit me was the distinctive production, it has that effortless addictive sound of The-Dream. While the lyrical content is empty as ever, it has Gym Class Heroes mark all over it, that R&B/Pop sound that I can't help but love.

I still can't help but to dislike Travis, he just annoys the hell out of me & I can't explain why, apart from the fact that he is one of the whack-est rappers out there at the moment. However, it doesn't put me off of a really good Pop song.

Gym Class Heroes will be previewing the material this summer with dates on the Warped Tour

Jeremy Camp : Let It Fade Music Video and Download

Jeremy Camp has never been one to hold back. "Beyond Measure" reveals a man secure enough to take risks, confident and willing, and it's a thrill ride for us all.

The path of Jeremy Camp has been a well-publicized one, and many have taken satisfaction in watching the blessings pour into his life. From the raw yearning of debut “Stay,” to the surrender of “Carried Me: The Worship Project,” to the strength of “Restored,” Camp has generously shared the process of his journey in his music, leaving fans feeling invested deeply in the story of this talented songwriter. Watching Camp find love again with Benjamin Gate’s Adie and establish a family with their two young children brought joy to fans, and they will understand the deep sense of recognition and gratitude that flows from “Beyond Measure.” The project feels personal, as does much of his work, but it also contains a feeling of release, of exhilarating freedom. Camp displays more diversity in these twelve tracks and a willingness to experiment a bit, stretching out both vocally and musically on tracks like the muscular pop-rocker “Everything.” The good news is that it works; listeners will pick up on the energy in most of these new songs.

Even as the heavy guitar riffs open the project with rocker “Tonight,” an excitement clearly pulsates. The upbeat guitar-driven “What It Means” follows, shimmering with hooks and sincere worship. The title track serves as the album’s centerpiece, a perfectly-placed rocker thick with gratitude and recognition of the cost of his blessings. The passion builds from this point forward, big in “Let It Fade” and the throbbing rocker “Feels Like.” It’s petal to the metal fervor in the pumping hard-rocker “No Matter What,” an uplifting song of promise and commitment. Things slow down briefly for the standout track, “I Am Nothing,” a quiet ballad of straight-up worship, its luscious strings, glowing vocals, and inventive changes building to a glorious crescendo of adoration. The anthemic “Give You Glory” follows, a rousing rocker dripping with exuberance. Camp takes a chance on the closing track, slowing and simplifying down to an acoustic guitar for “Give Me Jesus,” a simple praise ballad that is deeply expressive and worshipful. It’s good to see Jeremy Camp taking chances, especially when they work as well as they do on “Beyond Measure,” releasing from BEC Recordings on October 31st. The many listeners who have followed and enjoyed Camp’s fan-friendly generosity will find great satisfaction and even resolution in “Beyond Measure.”

If you enjoy Jeremy Camp's hard-rocking and vocal strengths, there are a few indie artists you should check out: Jason Harwell, Brandon Chase, and David Frust. And of course, Todd Agnew brings the same muscular strength to his projects as well.

Katy Perry : "I Kissed The Girl" Hot New Single This Summer

"I Kissed a Girl," which songwriter Katy Perry says is "about the magical beauty of a woman," is currently the No. 1 best-selling pop track on iTunes (& the #2 best-selling track overall on iTunes) and the #1 most-downloaded iTunes Ringtone. It is also the No. 1 most-requested song at multiple Top 40 stations nationwide, including New York's Z100 but also at Modern Rock stations like Los Angeles' KROQ."

Recently, MySpace launched an exclusive album premiere for One of the Boys and within one week, close to half a million people had logged on for a listen to the album. Aside from "I Kissed a Girl", other notable tracks include "Thinking of You", which was recently heard on MTV's The Hills and "Hot N Cold," a track that Blender Magazine calls a "spunky climate-controlled kiss-off."

The sexy, eye-popping video for "I Kissed A Girl", shot by Kinga Burza (Kate Nash, The Thrills), premiered on MySpace on May 21st and racked up more than 2 million views within two weeks -- making it the site's second-highest ranking premiere ever. The clip is already sizzling on VH1 (in large rotation), MTV Hits, Fuse and Music Choice, and has been featured on the Fuse network's Steven's Untitled Rock Show and Logo's "New Now Next" music-video series. MTV will introduce the video this Thursday on TRL during their "Spankin' New Music Week."

"I Kissed a Girl," which was produced by in-demand hitmaker Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne), is the lead-off single from Katy's debut album, One of the Boys, which will be released by Capitol Records on June 17th. A witty, pop-rock gem that showcases Katy's sharp, candid lyrics, big voice, and feisty, girl-power swagger, as well as her appealing vulnerability, One of the Boys is the full-length follow-up to her debut digital EP, Ur So Gay (available on iTunes since last November), which has already earned the 23-year-old Santa Barbara, CA, native a legion of devoted fans. Those fans include the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna, who recently gave Katy shout-outs on two morning radio shows, calling "Ur So Gay" her "favorite song."

Three days after One of the Boys is released, Katy Perry will kick-off this summer's Vans Warped Tour, appearing on the Hurley.com Stage for the tour's entire coast-to-coast run from June 20th to August 17th, 2008. You can also catch the raven-haired dynamo on the daytime drama The Young and the Restless. The episode, airing June 12th, features Katy as herself doing a photo shoot for the cover of Restless Style magazine (soon to be available at www.restlessstyle.com). Other upcoming television includes two appearances on TRL, one on June 12th for MTV's "Spankin' New Music Week," and one on June 16th. Katy will also perform "I Kissed a Girl" on Spike TV's Guy's Choice Awards, which airs on June 22nd.

Laura Marling, Alas, I Cannot Swim

Reviewed by Andy Gill

Even by the advanced standards of precocity displayed by many of today's tyro performers, Laura Marling is an extraordinary young talent. Listening to the mature reflections and acute observations in these 13 songs, it's hard to accept that their author turned 18 this week, and is already getting her second wind, dismissing her earlier output as "shit pop" and "absolutely awful".

The change in her work apparently came through encountering Bonnie Prince Billy's haunting I See a Darkness, an aesthetic epiphany that forced her to think more deeply about what she was doing. The result is Alas, I Cannot Swim, on which her young voice reveals an old, old heart. It's most evident in songs like "Old Stone", in which a standing stone – "10,000 years and you're still on your own" – prompts reflections on the comforts of solitude and self-sufficiency, while rolling tom-toms swell and ebb against the drone of harmonium; and in "Cross Your Fingers", in which apprehension about the fragility of seemingly secure structures leads to contemplation of the broad flood-plain of old age leading to the estuary of death.

Elsewhere, one gets an impression of someone building their worldview as they grow, struggling to deal with new situations, and simultaneously drawn to both the outgoing urges of youth and more introspective moods. In "My Manic & I", she's caught up in a torrent of doubt which, one suspects, is self-directed: "I can't control you, I don't know you well, these are the reasons I think that you're ill"; while over the sombre acoustic guitar picking of "Shine", she warns a potential emotional intruder: "I need shine – stay away from my light." But there are shafts of light; in the opener, "Ghosts", a young man scarred by "a ghost that broke my heart before I met you" ultimately finds redemptive love with the singer. "It turned out I'd been following him, and he'd been following me," she explains.

Marling goes against the grain of most modern pop, eschewing mockney bitchiness, diva showboating, indie guilt and trite hip-hop attitudes in favour of a folksy simplicity relying on well-turned melodies and sensitive arrangements of guitar, piano and violin embellished by French horn, trumpet or accordion, and even a male voice choir. Producer Charlie Fink has created a warm, welcoming instrumental backdrop that frames Marling's voice perfectly, revealing (but not accentuating) the echoes of singers like Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShea and Jolie Holland. It all adds up to a hugely impressive debut from an outstanding talent.

The Ting Tings: Shut Up And Let Me Go Download & Music Video

This is the band's next single and on a scale of 'not very good at all' to 'literally very amazing' it's somewhere towards the right hand side (if you have 'literally very amazing' on the right hand side). (If you have 'literally very amazing' on the left hand side it's more towards the left.)

U.K. duo are heating shit up. Their full-length We Started Nothing are hitting up the charts like there’s no tomorrow. So they are invading the states again but with more push behind their army. Their first attack and first ever appearance on American TV was on Jimmy Kimmel’s show.

Katie White and Jules de Martino’s brand of pop punk is highly energetic and bombastic. Make sure you don’t miss them on their U.S. invasion!

RATATAT - Mirando [Einstein MUST SEE!!!]

There are 64 individual deaths in the movie Predator. In New York Nintendo corps Ratatat’s “Mirando” video, composed of reanimated Predator clips, there are 41, give or take some repeats. On its own, the song is an appealing amalgamation of Black Dice rhythms, Matmos quirkiness, Iron Maiden guitar harmonies and Kōji Kondō Zelda theme fun. But it’s the video where it seems to make the most sense. “Mirando” is the Portuguese word for ‘target’ (Predator was filmed in Mexico), and the many explosions and remixed deaths of the video are synched so perfectly with Ratatat’s music that, having seen it, their song doesn’t feel as complete on its own anymore. This is a great effect if your band is Goblin, Vangelis or Green Jellÿ, but for a touring pseudo-rock band with smart DJ sensibilities (check last year’s pretty-decent hip-hop remixtape), it’s self-defeating. If the song is engaging as it is, why put it visually in the line of fire? - KORY GROW

Glaswegian indie rock foursome Frightened Rabbit has slowly revealed more and more of itself (in approximate proportion to the almost humorous multiplication of its membership) since unceremoniously shuffling into the consciousness of the American indiescenti in 2006. While the five-year-old bands principals remain cagey about using their last name (for the record: Hutchison, Hutchison, Kennedy a new third guitarist is named Andy Monaghan, according to Wikipedia), the gradual revelation is audibly manifested in the steady scrubbing away of noise and clamor of Frightened Rabbits recordings. This cleansing culminates with the release of the trios spectacular sophomore full-length, The Midnight Organ Fight. The set was recorded by Peter Katis (Interpol in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mobius Band), and, indeed, his production renders the tracks nearly crystalline.

[New Album] P.O.D. :When Angels And Serpents Dance

A few things have happened in the P.O.D. camp since the release of their last album, Testify. Frontman Sonny Sandoval lobbed off his signature dreads. Gasp! In all seriousness, the Cali band left longtime label Atlantic for the new confines of Columbia. And prodigal son, guitarist Marcos Curiel, who played with the band on multi-platinum super smashes The Fundamental Elements Of Southtown and Satellite before bailing, has returned to the fold. How do all these factors effect When Angels And Serpents Dance? Positively, I'm happy to report. P.O.D. have matured and progressed from their rap-rock-reggae hybrid, crafting smart songs with groove. When Angels And Serpents Dance is a well-manicured collection of radio-ready hard rock with balls. Sandoval still delivers his positive lyrics in a hip-hop cadence, and Curiel's riffs clamp down on the jugular on raucous rawkers like "Condescending" and "Addicted." The glorious "End Of The World," featuring a Gospel choir, is reminiscent of the band's huge Satellite hit, "Youth Of The Nation." But it's not a copy or repeat of past effort; this song is edgier, and at times, has a classic rock vibe pumping through its veins.

There's a spate of guest vocal appearances, ranging from Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir to the Marley Sisters to Helmet's Page Hamilton. All those guests make sense, since P.O.D. siphon from the punk rock, reggae, and metal tanks for influence. While rap–infused rock has fallen out of popular music's favor, P.O.D. manage to keep their formula fresh, thanks to their glass-half-full lyrical bend and infusion of reggae. When Angels And Serpents Dance is a healthy rebound for the Payable On Death.

[New Album]Switches:Lay Down The Law

You have to give the lads of Switches credit. From the very first track of their US debut full-length, “Lay Down The Law,” the band face the Queen references head on. “But it remains to be seen if you’ve got what it takes to be queen,” the band sings in a multipart harmony. Sure, they are referring to the song’s title, “Drama Queen,” but the energetic and catchy chorus poses an interesting question worth pondering.

Elsewhere on “Lay Down The Law,” Switches keep their dancing shoes on. The album’s title track is upbeat rock whose stamping rhythm spins like a top while “Stepkids In Love” pounds steadily, falsetto vocals careening behind the deep melody. The gentleness of “The Need To Be Needed” comes across as a slightly updated (and much less upbeat) version of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want” as “Killer Karma” sounds like a glossier version of Bowie.

Do Switches have what it takes to be Queen? No, of course they do not. But in their defense, while the sounds of Queen are notable in their music, there is far more to Switches than that. While “Lay Down The Law” offers a full introduction to the band, the album is, essentially, a few strong tracks that are surrounded with decent but not stellar filler. Switches go far enough with “Lay Down The Law” to grab the attention but that is where they abruptly stop.

RELEASE iNFORMATiON

British yobs wanna party like its 1975
In light of the mild-mannered Coldplay knockoffs of the last few years, its easy to forget that British rockers used to be cocky young things, happy to bang out shout-along choruses filled with drug references.Switches remember their debut LP sounds as if it were written with soccer stadiums in mind, complete with chirpy harmonies and hooks that broadcast singer Matt Bishops ELO fixation. But the quarter throws itself into these vintage gestures with so much verve and dumb-fun exuberance that the songs, even with their simplistic, catchphrase lyrics, are hard to resist. From the g lammy pop of Snakes & Ladders to the standout KIller Karma, they make the case
for old-fashioned, smartly-executed - and winning - bombast.

[Hotest Artist] Kat DeLuna :9 Lives Mv & DOWNLOAD

Her Bio

Kat DeLuna is the girl next door, no matter where you're from. To say she's a crossover artist is an understatement. Hip hop, R&B, merengue, pop, Spanish jazz, ballads, and dance, she does it all; in English and Spanish. Want proof? R&B superstar R. Kelly called her a "prodigy" and the famous Salvadorian singer Alvaro Torres referred to her as Selena. At age 12 she was invited by the "Queen of Merengue" Milly Quezada, to sing with her on stage in front of thousands of people, and in April of 2004 she opened for J Records recording artist Cassidy as part of the all Latino girl group Coquette. All this, and KAT is only 19 years old.

Despite her success, things haven't always come easy for KAT. Shortly after Kat Emperatriz De Luna and her family moved from the Bronx to the Dominican Republic, where she was raised in poverty. KAT spent her time listening to Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday records, which she imitated daily on her karaoke machine.

Friends and family recognized her talent at an early age, but it wasn't until moving back to the US that KAT realized her potential as a singer. With that goal in mind at age 14, KAT was accepted to the New Jersey School of the Performing Arts. As a freshman, she scoured the pages of The Village Voice for auditions. KAT auditioned endlessly for a chance to showcase her undeniable talent and finally received a call for an all girl group. KAT recognized that music was missing a Latin flavor. She sought to fill this void and formed the first Latina, Hip Hop/R&B group: Coquette. This does not only display KATs ability to tap into her culture background to differentiate herself in the industry, but also her business acumen.

While working with Coquette KAT continued to search for opportunities to lead her towards her goal as a performer. At age15, KAT entered a Coca-Cola sponsored karaoke competition. Her version of I Will Always Love You took first place. It was through this competition that she met legendary Cuban salsa singer Rey Ruiz. Ruiz gave KAT advice that she carries with her today. "He told me, nobody knows you better than you do, and that nobody can help you if you can't help yourself," says KAT. With this, KAT began writing her own music and has continued to do so since.

Today, KAT is signed to GMB Music Group/Epic Recoreds as a solo artist and is hard at work in the studio every day. In addition to her great recording work ethic, her days are filled with vocal classes, dance lessons, and the gym. With the attitude that she'll do whatever it takes to make it, KATs hard work is already beginning to pay off.
It will not be too long until KATs presence is felt by music listeners around the globe. Currently, GMB/Epic is in the process of launching a full promotional campaign for KATs first single: "Dale Duro!" ft Jae Millz & Chaka Dee, a definite club banger, is gaining heavy rotation in New York City's nightclubs and is about to invade KAT's new hometown Miami, FL. KAT is a rare find in that she is the complete package. KAT is a quadruple threat with her dancing, singing, writing abilities and the ideal image, which makes it effortless for her to connect with her audience. KAT has the work ethic, maturity, and the crossover appeal necessary to not only make it in this hard business, but to do so on an international level.

This her latet Album: 9 Lives
(I think she's like a CAT)

9 Lives Review

With four years of opera training behind her, it's clear that 19-year-old pop singer Kat DeLuna -- who was born in the Bronx, spent several years in Santo Domingo, and eventually returned to the U.S. -- wasn't signed merely on the basis of her looks and passable ability to carry a tune. Her debut, 9 Lives , features credible streaks of dancehall, Latin pop, Euro-pop, modern R&B, freestyle and yes, (albeit to a much lesser extent) opera as well. To DeLuna (who co-wrote everything) and her producer RedOne's credit, the album never quite sounds calculated or unnatural. While appealing multicultural/genre-crossing pop is nothing new, and a few tracks here are boilerplate and lack bite, DeLuna's controlled exuberance, ability to adapt to numerous styles, and considerable vocal ability keep it all afloat. The week the album was rel , had already been on the Hot 100 chart for two months, and it's the album's definite center, though a handful of potential singles could break the mainstream pop singles chart while approaching the tops of the dance, R&B, and Latin charts. On the surface, it might seem like she's an exceptionally talented singer who happened to strike at the right time with the right sound, but the majority of 9 Lives makes it known that she should be around for some time. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

[Interview] Counting Crows talk to latest album & DOWNLOADS

Fourteen years ago this month, Counting Crows burst onto the music scene with the hook-laden single Mr Jones and the multi-platinum album, August And Everything After.

Their latest CD is split into two distinct parts - the angry, rock of Saturday Nights and the laid-back folk vibes of Sunday Mornings.

Lead singer Adam Duritz talks about his fight to get the record released, insomnia, and getting angry with fans.

The album was originally supposed to come out last November - did you have trouble finishing it?

Not at all. It's been done since last June. We pulled the record ourselves because the label didn't have any idea of how to put it out.

What happened?

There's this massive invention that allows everyone to reach everyone else in the entire world for free. It's called the internet and I was trying to explain that to the record label.

I wanted to put out a free "digital 45" - one song from each side of the record - to get the idea of the album's two different themes out there.

So the label didn't like the idea?

Well, they said no. So we pulled the record - and believe me they weren't happy with losing a Christmas release.

You eventually got your way. Do you think the tactic worked?

Put it this way - I got an email from a guy I know at Apple a month before the album was available, and the pre-sale version was at number eight on iTunes.

There was no single, we hadn't done any press at that point, there was no reason for us to be that high on the charts - except we did all this online stuff.

I don't know about the record business, but the music industry is not dead. It's a great time to be in a band because there's a tool that allows you to reach everyone for free.

You adopted the internet very early on [Duritz has kept an online diary for years]. Are you ever overwhelmed by the number of fans? Presumably some of them are a bit obsessive.

We have big arguments! You know, I promised them at the very beginning that I would be honest about everything and that meant that when I got angry with them, I would write angry stuff and we would have huge fights!

Has there ever been a point when you've thought: "I can't take this anymore" and decided to stop writing to people on the website?"

No, but there was about a year when I either began or ended every diary entry with "some of you are very unpleasant people!"

It began because I've been a good friend of the actress Mary Louise-Parker [Weeds, The West Wing] since we were kids. Someone from her fan club wrote to our site asking if anyone would like to raise money to buy a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for her, and she just got savaged by our fans.

They laid into this poor girl who was, you know, just like them. She was somebody's fan. So I just ranted at them on every post - even the nice ones.

I'd write something beautiful like: "Everything is possible and your dreams can come true. By the way, some of you are very unpleasant people, love Adam."

Do you still suffer from insomnia?

I've always had problems - I have a dissociative disorder, which makes the world seem like it's not real. And when the world doesn't seem real, it can be really scary to let go and give up even more of it. So sleep has always been something of a problem.

It's particularly hard for me because of the gigs. A gig is like doing a workout that ends at 11:30. I don't get home 'til after one and I'm wired. So touring really adds to my insomnia.

Does it affect your writing?

A lot of my songs are about isolation and certainly that sensation is never quite as strong as it is in the middle of the night. But I've written a lot of songs in the daylight, too.

You're coming over to headline the Wireless Festival in UK this year - are you excited?

Oh yeah, that's cool. Headlining in Hyde Park? That's pretty cool.

We made our career in Europe by playing festivals, so I have a lot of love and reverence for those shows.

What's your favourite festival memory?

In the 1990s, we spent a whole summer where our end of the day ritual was to meet the guys from Gomez at the side of the stage and smoke cigarettes and drink cans of beer and watch Oasis.

Noel Gallagher is a genius. Those songs are great, and they're loud and they're fun. That's a really good way to spend the end of the day.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
Ohh watching me, hanging by a string this time.
Ohh easily, the climax of the perfect lie.
Ohh watching me, hanging by a string this time.
Ohh easily, smile worth a hundred lies.
If there’s lessons to be learned, I’d rather get my jamming words in first so, tell you something that I’ve found, that the worlds a better place when it’s upside down boy.
If there’s lessons to be learned, I’d rather get my jamming words in first so, when your playing with desire, don’t come running to my place when it burns like fire boy.

Chorus:
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh

Verse 2:
Blue, blue, blue, waves they crash as time goes by, so hard to catch.
Too, too smooth, ain’t all that, why don’t you ride on my side of the tracks.
If there’s lessons to be learned, I’d rather get my jamming words in first so, when your playing with desire, don’t come running to my place when it burns like fire boy.

Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh(fading out)Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, YehhSweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh

Rick Ross - Trilla
Album Review by: John Burnett

I've come to a disheartening and perplexing conclusion. I—like many rap heads—am addicted to crack rap. After mad years of hearing the same embellished Tony Montana motifs play out over different beats I still enjoy hearing properly executed rhymes about the wanton exploits of your respective neighborhood medicine man. And judging from the sales that are attached to some of these coke-laden rap discs, so do you. The narrator on this occasion happens to be Rick Ross and the cinematic experience is Trilla.

Based off of Port of Miami, I predicted two things for what I’d hear on Trilla. There was going to be some dope beats and probably a few (much sarcasm intended) references to coke. I was right about both but there was also an added bonus. Coming out on the back end, I’ve come to the realization either Rick Ross acquired an ill ghostwriter or dude’s flow has vastly improved. On the Bink! produced (and eerily Roc-A-Fella nostalgia inducing) “We Shinin’” I caught a surprise blow to the chin by the quote “am I a target for police because I puff E/not an artist I’m regarded as a Puffy/like a pimp I’mma skip past a Kim Porter/like a pimp order, pimp, I import her.” I mean this is Rick Ross right? The flow doesn’t fall off either with Ross tucked neatly between the church-like organs and wailing sample. Then there’s the literal gangster role call provided on the “Trilla Intro” where Ross oddly proclaims he’s rhyming with kush and lean on his breath. In the most sinister way possible Ross gruffly barks “I don’t give a fuck about death/cause death don’t give a fuck about flesh/cause flesh don’t give a fuck about mine/and never gave fuck about mine.”

[Review] R.E.M. - Accelerate att. MV & Download

It's still a dog : R.E.M. find hope despite the (recent) times.

There's a well worn concept in music criticism - one probably applied more rigidly to rock than anywhere else - known as 'the career arc'. Variations can be found, but the most commonly utilised version follows thusly:

a) underground darlings
b) slow move to alt.mainstream / mainstream-mainstream recognition
c) big album explosion / 'biggest band in the world'
d) more 'selective' appeal / shadow of artistic and/or commercial self
e) honorary elders of rock, feted for growing old gracefully.

Whilst there is also many an example you could use to illustrate this, it could be argued that - at least currently - R.E.M. represent the condition more so than most. The real question is, can they finally tick box e, having struggled trapped in box d (at least on record) for the best part of a decade. Before I bore you with what will probably be another precis of what has brought about that decade of artistic inertia, without indulging once again my theories on critical revisionism (or how we crap on those who have served us best for the slightest errant move), I do need to admit that personally I will put the Murmur to Automatic For The People run up there with pretty much any decade long run of albums you care to mention. I'd also contend that New Adventures in Hi-Fi, a vastly underrated album then and now, would have extended that run had it not been predeced by the self-consciously glam/grunge hybrid that was Monster (not a bad record in itself, but certainly strained and contrived in areas).

What is also true however, is that the real monster that has dogged the latter part of the band's career has been the departure of Bill Berry in 1997, and the inescapable ceasura it created between the light and the shade of their output. The first three albums the triumvirate R.E.M. put out have seen a band floundering, unsure of where to go, of who to be, of exactly what that band is now supposed to represent. Up and Reveal would have both made good 5 or 6 track ep's, characterised as they both were by distinct high points surrounded by muddled lethargy. Stick Leaving New York and The Ascent Of Man (from the otherwise dreary and anaemic Around The Sun) on, and you could cobble together a good post-Berry R.E.M. sampler - but still something well below that which went before.

So now they're back. Again. With another new modus operandi designed to kick start the creative motors, embodied by the 'live rehearsal' week in Dublin last year. The fact that those shows, and the new songs aired within, were greeted with no short measure of positivity bode well, but then again, R.E.M.'s live chops have never really been in question. It's actually all about how - IF - they could take this new impetus and allow it to invigour and embolden them in the studio, rather than be hamstrung once more by the studio environment. Let's face it, making an off-the-cuff, punky, live sounding record can end up sounding utterly contrived if not handled correctly.

The album is, from the off, fast and furious, (except in the areas where it's fucking fast, and the odd part which is a bit slower). Opener Living Well Is The Best Revenge comes out of the speakers like it's just shot Marvin in the face, a bastard cousin of Iggy's Funtime, the intro all Buck's razor-edged jangles, and Mills' high end bass notes tumbling and cascading down the scale, as Stipe's declamatory hollering bashes its way through. Man-sized Wreath follows a similar path, with shears of guitar underpinning the verses, before the chorus bounces in with Mills' long harmonising "Ah"'s perfectly underscoring the chorus and its exultation of 'kicking out on the dancefloor like you just dont care'. Michael...I've seen you dance......

One of the frustraions of the R.E.M. of the last 10 years has been that the lead singles have been false promises - Imitation Of Life, Daysleeper, and Leaving New York promised much and the rest delivered little. Certainly Supernatural Superserious meets the first criteria, another perfect choice for a lead track, not as intense and rasping as much of the rest of the album, but ebullient and melodic. The sombre piano opening of Hollow Man does give you the willies a bit, puts the "Shit the bed lads, not again" monkey in the room, but its a great false start, its simplicity and shifts in pace offering patches of breath from the overall rush without losing the momentum.

Houston introduces more shifts of pace as we hit the mid-section of the record, takes the pace down, mixing high end organ with low, coarsing guitar, reminiscent of the cello on Sweetness Follows. There is an obvious reference to open with ('if the storm doesn't kill me the government will'), Stipe the polemicist back, but the actual song taps into a more personal sense ('I've got to get that out of my head'), a perspective of and from the south of America, not dwelling on the damage the politicians did in the aftermath of Katrina. Yes it is bluntly acknowledging that damage but spends more time on, however cliched it might sound, the spirit of the people and places Stipe connects with, strong in the face of the weakness and disregard of their leaders, the strength of the associations he has with the places winning out over the desolation -

'Houston is filled with promise....And Galveston sings like that song that I loved
It's meaning has not been erased...' .

Similar pronouncements are made on Until The Day Is Done ; think the undulating acoustic guitar of Swan Swan H, the deep atmospherics of Drive, but without the layers and layers that you might have come to expect over recent years, allowing full rein to Stipe's treatise on how 'the verdict is dire, the country's in ruins / providence blinked facing the sun' - this contexting of 'providence', the foreseeing care and guidance of God or nature over the creatures of the earth, which 'America Inc.' specifically reserves for itself above any other, damns the gap illuminated between what is projected, and what actually is. Mr.Richards follows on and makes something out of the wasted melody that made up Chorus and the Ring, a tepid drawl from Reveal, and continues its examination of the body politic, reminding the titluar every-politician that 'you're mistaken if you think we'll just forget.... Pay attention...we know what's going on'.

Sing for the Submarine stands out due to being more dense and obtuse, with an instrumental breakdown akin to something Comets On Fire would work out for about half an hour, all mountainous drums and searing guitars, falling into a plucked, doleful resolution. Lyrically its more of Stipe's opacity, but punctuated with telling self references to 'electron blue', how he can 'feel gravity's pull' and 'the world as we know it, the high speed train, we'll pick it all up and start again'. The relative calm is forgotten with the closing tracks however ; Horse To Water is a flail of crunching guitars and breakneck drums, and closer I'm Gonna DJ is daffy and teasingly throwaway, but perhaps, given its recent tenure in the R.E.M. live set is a testament to how much the live experience has informed this record - so why not finish it in the same way. And then its all over, in just over half an hour! I'd defy most to not just put it on again. And again.....

Accelerate is a wonderful balance of nods, glances and in some places heavy leaps towards former glories, but ones imbued with a confidence and belief that produce R.E.M.'s most cohesive record since Automatic..., their ballsiest record since Life's Rich Pageant. It's no blithe patchwork of old references, more a joyous celebration of the freeing potency of reconnection, both the nub of the problem and the epiphanous movement forward being best described in the title track, which has riding on top of its juggernauting drums and excoriating guitars lines such as 'Where is the rip cord, the trap door, the key?
Where is cartoon escape hatch for me?
No time to question the choices I make
I've got to fall in another direction....accelerate'.

Thankfully, eventually, they've only just gone and cracked it haven't they - and cracked it hard! Yes, they have done so by tapping into their past, but in doing so have released themselves from that fruitless identity quest they were on, and have discovered that what was important about the Stipe quote of 1998 , "A three legged dog is still a dog, it just has to learn to run differently", was not the latter part but the former. It's still a dog, its ability to run is instinctive. R.E.M. forgot what they were due to assumptions that they would have learn to be something different in order to survive. They have reminded not only us, but themselves why they were, and thankfully are once more, such an important band.
